Kofukuji Temple, Nara: Five-Story Pagoda

Guardian Temple of the Fujiwara Clan

Kofukuji originates from a predecessor temple associated with Fujiwara no Kamatari, ancestor of the Fujiwara clan, and moved to its current location with the transfer of the capital to Nara-kyo in 710. Flourishing alongside Fujiwara authority, it was once a great temple at the center of Nara's politics, religion, and culture, and was inscribed in 1998 as part of the World Heritage Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.

Ashura Statue

The Ashura Statue enshrined in the National Treasure Museum is an 8th-century masterpiece depicting the Ashura king with three faces and six arms. Its slender, melancholy expression has earned it wide admiration, and the museum holds many other outstanding Buddhist sculptures.

Five-Story Pagoda and Chukondo

The five-story pagoda, at 50.1 meters, is the second tallest surviving wooden pagoda in Japan after To-ji's, and a beloved Nara landmark; the current structure was rebuilt in 1426. Since 2023 the pagoda has been undergoing major repairs including reroofing, so its exterior may be hidden by scaffolding during the work, expected to continue until around 2031. The Chukondo, rebuilt in 2018 in its original founding form, revives the magnificent temple hall with beautiful vermilion pillars and white walls.

Practical Travel Notes

From Kintetsu Nara Station it is about a 5-minute walk, and from JR Nara Station about 15 minutes, within a corner of Nara Park. Strolling the precinct is free, while the National Treasure Museum and individual halls charge admission; combined tickets are sometimes available. Because the pagoda is under repair, the classic view from the Sarusawa Pond side may not be available, so photographers should check in advance. Cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons and evening illumination periods are especially crowded. Many halls prohibit photography, so follow the posted guidance. Note that deer live throughout the surrounding park, so keep food and plastic bags out of sight.
