Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine

In the southern part of Nara Prefecture, in Tenkawa Village surrounded by deep mountains, sits Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine. Enshrining Ichikishimahime no Mikoto as Benzaiten, it is a storied old shrine counted as the foremost of the three great Benzaiten shrines of Japan. Since ancient times it has been deeply revered as a deity of performing arts and the arts, and for blessings of wealth, matchmaking, and beauty. Owing to the difficulty of access, it is said to be reached only by those who are called, and it is known for being visited by many in the performing arts, a power spot full of a mystical atmosphere.

As it sits in a mountain village, a visit by car is convenient. By public transport the buses are infrequent, so be sure to check the timetable. As the shrine has a sacred atmosphere, worship quietly and with respect. The surroundings have many sights such as Dorogawa Onsen and the Mendo limestone cave, so touring them together with the nature of Tenkawa makes for a full trip.
