One of Japan's Foremost Cherry Blossom Sites

Yoshino's cherries are mainly Shiroyamazakura, planted continuously for more than 1,000 years through the faith of Shugendo mountain asceticism. Cherished as sacred trees, they now number about 30,000. The way the whole mountain is covered in blossom has a grand, wild beauty different from rows of Somei-yoshino cherries. It is a sacred blossom site, inscribed in 2004 as part of the World Heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.

From Shimo Senbon to Oku Senbon

Yoshino's cherries are planted by elevation, from the lower Shimo Senbon up through Naka Senbon and Kami Senbon to the deep-mountain Oku Senbon. Because of this, blooming progresses from the foot to the summit, and the blossoms can be enjoyed over roughly three weeks. A dynamic spectacle unfolds, as if pale pink cherries were running up the mountainside.

The Hitome Senbon Spectacle

The signature view of Yoshino is the hitome senbon, a spectacle in which a thousand cherry trees can be taken in at a single glance. From viewpoints in the Naka Senbon area, the vast panorama of blossoms filling the valley is breathtaking. Cherry trees veiling the mountain like mist, together with the roofs of scattered temples and shrines, form a scene like a painting. In some years the blossoms are lit up at night for a dreamlike display. Within the mountain rises the Zaodo of World Heritage Kinpusenji, and the scenery of blossoms and ancient temple is another highlight.

Access and Basic Information

Access is from Yoshino Station, the terminus of the Kintetsu Yoshino Line. From the station you head up the mountain by ropeway, on foot, or by seasonal bus (the ropeway may be suspended at times, so check in advance). The blossoms are usually at their best from early to mid or late April, and because blooming progresses from Shimo Senbon to Oku Senbon they can be enjoyed over a relatively long period. The cherry season is very crowded, with traffic congestion and occasional traffic controls on nearby roads, so using public transport and starting early are recommended.

Practical Travel Notes

• Because the cherries bloom in order of elevation, checking which area (Shimo, Naka, Kami or Oku Senbon) is at its best on your visit date helps you tour efficiently.
• The mountain has many slopes and stone steps, and walking from Shimo Senbon to Oku Senbon covers a fair distance, so wear comfortable shoes and pace yourself.
• Weekends in the cherry season are especially crowded, with congested car parks and roads, so travelling by Kintetsu or other public transport is more comfortable.
• World Heritage temples and shrines such as Kinpusenji and Yoshimizu Shrine are scattered about; visiting them along with the blossoms is rewarding.
• The mountain top is cooler than the city, so a jacket is reassuring in the morning, evening or at illumination time.
