Access

Access

If using public transportation: About 20 minutes by taxi, or about 30 minutes by route bus (get off at the "Hakkaisan Ropeway" stop), from "Urasa Station" on the Joetsu Shinkansen. Since access by Shinkansen is possible, it's a just-right distance even for a day trip from Tokyo.

If using a car: Access is good, about 15 minutes from "Muikamachi IC" on the Kan-Etsu Expressway. Parking capacity and fee information for Mt. Hakkai are not published on the official website. Aiming for arrival by 8:00 a.m. can reduce the stress of searching for parking.

• The ropeway can form long lines on weekends in autumn foliage season. Aiming for a weekday visit, or the 8 o'clock hour right after opening, is wise. Since the cold takes a toll when the wait grows long, be thoroughly prepared for the cold too
• If hiking, be sure to wear easy-to-move clothing and climbing shoes. Note that the eight peaks (Happo) are an advanced-level course with continuous chained sections and rocky areas. Mt. Yahiko

Best Season / Recommended Time of Day The autumn foliage peak around Yahiko Shrine is late October to early November. The autumn that comes later than Mt. Naeba and Mt. Hakkai draws a beautiful contrast between the golden of the ginkgo standing in the shrine precincts and the vivid red of the maples. Especially recommended is early-morning worship. The morning precincts, with still few worshippers, have crisply clear air, and the vermilion-lacquered torii and the colored trees stand out in the stillness, letting you have the autumn foliage to yourself in a sacred atmosphere as if time had stopped.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy A hidden supporting player of Yahiko sightseeing is "Yahiko Onsen." Since you can access it in a little over 2 hours from Tokyo using the Shinkansen, it's ideal even for a casual day trip.

If using a car: About 30 minutes from "Sanjo-Tsubame IC" on the Hokuriku Expressway. The parking lots near the precincts are normally free, but during the chrysanthemum festival and autumn foliage season the designated lots become paid (1,000 yen for ordinary cars, 3,000 yen for large vehicles; cash only, no reservations accepted). The 2025 paid period ran from 31 October to 30 November.

Tips for Travelers

• During Yahiko Shrine's annual festival and the autumn foliage festival period, worshippers increase, but the crowds are far gentler than at Mt. Naeba and Mt. Hakkai. It's a spot you can visit with peace of mind even for those who want to take photos leisurely, those with children, and the elderly
• The ropeway closes in winter (December through March) and has a weekly day off on Tuesdays during that period. Be sure to confirm the operating schedule before visiting.
• The precincts of Yahiko Shrine are a sacred place. Refrain from loud conversation and running around, and enjoy worship and strolling with a quiet heart
• Around Yahiko Station, local diners and souvenir shops line up. Do try flavors you can encounter only here, such as Niigata's representative regional sweet "sasa-dango" and the traditional food "ego" made by solidifying seaweed. Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

How to See the Same Foliage as Naeba-san Without Climbing It: The Dragondola

Mt. Naeba (2,145 m) is a mountain for intermediate to advanced hikers. For those who have not prepared for a mountain hike, the Dragondola and Tashiro Ropeway at Naeba Ski Resort are a way to view the foliage in the same Yuzawa area from an elevated vantage point.

However, please understand this precisely: taking the Dragondola or Tashiro Ropeway will not bring you to the summit of Mt. Naeba. The Naeba Ski Resort official website states clearly that "the mountain trail from the Tashiro Ropeway has already been abandoned and cannot be used for hiking." These are entirely different locations' foliage experiences.

Reservations are "unnecessary" and "not possible." The official FAQ states: "No advance reservation is required; advance reservations are not accepted. Tickets are sold on the day at the venue." You can pre-pay online via Jalan, but this is simply settling payment in advance — it does not assign a time slot, and you must exchange your voucher at the on-site ticket counter.

The ¥4,000 fare is a combined ticket with four options to choose from: Dragondola round trip, Tashiro Ropeway round trip, and one-way options on each. Note, however, that if you want to ride both round trip, you need a separate round-trip ticket for each. The Panorama Lift is separately priced (round trip ¥1,700 for adults; cash only).

Two things to note if you are driving: private vehicles are not admitted to the Dragondola valley station. Park at the car park in front of the day lodge "Schnee" and make your way to the valley station by free shuttle bus (or on foot). Because car navigation systems cannot be set using hotel names or phone numbers, use the map code 554 424 599*88. The connecting bus between Naeba and Tashiro car parks is free and runs every 20 minutes.

The official website publishes typical peak times by elevation:

On crowding, the official website says: "Weekdays are relatively less busy than weekends and public holidays, and on some days we can accommodate guests smoothly, but during the peak foliage period of mid to late October, even weekdays can be very busy." The average temperature at the upper station is around 2 °C and at the lower station around 5 °C. Even in October, full winter clothing is needed.

For reference, in 2024 the season ran from 5 October to 4 November and the adult fare was ¥3,800. Both the dates and the price change from year to year.

Hakkaisan Ropeway: Fares Rise from October

The easy-to-miss detail about Hakkaisan Ropeway is that fares go up from 1 October.

• Operating season: 25 April–15 November 2026 (green season only; not in operation during winter)
• Operating hours: all day 8:00–16:00 (last downward ride 16:30), every 20 minutes (at :00, :20, :40 past each hour)
• Advance online tickets available. Pets: round trip ¥500 / one way ¥300

Here the official sources contradict each other. The operating company (Seibu Prince) lists "25 Apr–15 Nov," while Minamiuonuma City Tourism Association lists "26 Apr–16 Nov." Cross-checking against the day of the week confirms the latter matches the 2025 calendar — an update that was not made. Please use the operating company's dates.

There is no official information specifying a concrete peak foliage period for Hakkaisan. Minamiuonuma City Tourism Association explains: "Foliage begins when the daily minimum temperature drops below 8 °C. When it reaches 5 °C or 6 °C, the colours advance rapidly," and they publish a live camera feed. Think of it as a place where you judge by temperature, not by date.

For those considering hiking, here are official warnings: the Byobu-do course states "descent is prohibited due to the severe gradient"; Yatsumine (the eight peaks) requires "helmets, due to continuous chains and narrow footholds"; and the traverse to Mt. Nakadake is noted as having "many fatalities." From the ropeway upper station to the main summit and back is approximately 6 hours round trip. Senbonhigashi-goya hut is open July to late October on a fully reservation-only basis (1 night with 2 meals ¥9,000).

Yahiko: Car Parks Become "Paid" During the Foliage Season

Yahiko car parks are normally free. However, during the chrysanthemum festival and foliage season only, designated car parks charge a fee.

The official website requests that visitors "please limit your stay to approximately one hour," and roadside drop-offs and pick-ups are also prohibited. Helpfully, live camera feeds of congestion on surrounding roads and in the car parks are available. Check before you leave.

Yahiko Park Momijidani (Maple Valley) night illuminations ran from 29 October to 23 November in 2022 and from 31 October to 30 November in 2025. The dates shift from year to year, but the lighting hours were 17:00–21:00 in both cases. Yahiko Park has free admission.

Yahiko Kiku Matsuri (chrysanthemum festival) — the official website states clearly that it is held every year from 1 November to 24 November. Because the dates are fixed, this is an event that is straightforward to plan around. Around 3,000 potted chrysanthemums and a large landscape flower bed made from 30,000 cutting-raised small chrysanthemums can be seen within the grounds of Yahiko Shrine.

Peak foliage: typically early to mid-November (Yahiko Tourism Association).

Yahiko-yama Ropeway fares: adults round trip ¥1,500 / one way ¥800 (children ¥750 / ¥400; children under 3 free); journey time approximately 5 minutes. A free shuttle bus runs approximately 2 minutes from beside the worship hall of Yahiko Shrine to the lower ropeway station. The panorama tower at the summit costs ¥650 for adults and ¥350 for children; it is open April through the end of November.

Three Rules for the Yahikoyama Skyline

If driving to the summit, the toll-free Yahikoyama Skyline (13.7 km) is used, but there are three restrictions:

1. Closed between 23:00–5:00 at night (year-round) 2. Closed during winter from 1 December to 31 March (extended if icy conditions persist) 3. All motorcycles are prohibited (both under-50 cc mopeds and larger motorcycles)

Speed limit 40 km/h; no overtaking on the entire route. The road also closes if hourly rainfall exceeds 30 mm, cumulative rainfall exceeds 80 mm, or wind speed exceeds 25 m/s. Journey time from Yahiko Shrine to the summit is approximately 25 minutes (via the Sarugababa gate).

During the chrysanthemum festival period the roads become very congested, and the Yahiko Tourism Association officially encourages visitors to use JR autumn special trains.

Bear Awareness (Niigata Prefecture Currently Under a "Caution Advisory")

Niigata Prefecture is continuing its "Bear Sighting Caution Advisory" (issued 19 May 2026; continuation decided on 17 July 2026). Moreover, a second bear-related human injury this year occurred on 20 June 2026 in Minamiuonuma City, where Hakkaisan is located.

The prefecture is calling for the following actions:

• Check local sighting information and do not approach areas where bears are present
• Avoid entering the mountains in the early morning and evening, when bears are most active
• Go in groups and carry a radio, bell, bear deterrent spray, and similar items
• If you encounter a bear, calmly back away without rushing (do not run; do not show your back)
• If attacked, lie face-down and protect the back of your neck with both hands

The prefecture publishes the latest sighting data on its "Niigata Bear Sighting Map." Be sure to check it before you set out.
