Niigata City One Day Model Course: Furumachi, Ponshukan and Harbor Gourmet
Facing the Sea of Japan, Niigata City is a port town that flourished long ago thanks to the Kitamaebune trading ships. The atmospheric streets of Furumachi, the Ponshukan hall lined with local sake, and the fresh seafood of the harbor district pack a full day of pleasures into one walkable route. This course starts at Niigata Station and combines walking with short bus rides. The distances are moderate, making it a great choice for a first trip to Niigata.
Course Route
9:00 Start at Niigata Station Begin at the Bandai exit of Niigata Station. Get a feel for the city at the Ponshukan inside the station building, then head into the town center on foot or by bus.
9:30 Sake tasting at Ponshukan Niigata Station branch The signature attraction is a tasting corner where you insert a coin and choose a small cup of local sake. Pick a morning pour from the flagship labels of roughly ninety breweries across the prefecture.
10:30 Cross Bandai Bridge to Furumachi Spanning the Shinano River, Bandai Bridge is a handsome stone crossing. Walk across slowly and aim for the Furumachi area on the far bank.
11:00 Stroll the Furumachi shopping arcade The arcaded Furumachi street is a calm avenue dotted with long established sweet shops and coffee houses. Wander the side lanes that still carry hints of the old geisha quarter.

Highlights
The greatest appeal is the easy taste of sake culture at Ponshukan. Because you can compare many kinds in small pours, even people unfamiliar with sake can find a bottle to love. The streets of Furumachi still hold the mood of old geisha quarters and merchant houses, and time flows gently here. The scenery along the Shinano River and the bustle of the port are sights unique to this town.
Access and Tips
A loop bus is handy from Niigata Station toward Furumachi. A one day pass lets you hop on and off freely for good value. On a day of sake tasting, of course avoid driving and use public transport. The sights around Furumachi cluster within walking range, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
A Quick Tip
Even small pours add up, so the effect creeps in. Drink water between tastings and keep an easy pace. Some shops sell out of seafood by evening, so an early lunch is safest if you are chasing a famous dish.
