Okinogu

In Onoyama Park in Naha City, Okinogu is a shrine counted among the eight shrines of the Ryukyu. Originally located near Naha Port, it gathered faith as a deity of safe voyages, but it was relocated with the harbor construction of the Meiji era and moved to its present site within Onoyama Park in 1975 after the war. The grounds hold the Mount Tento sacred grove, said to be where the roots of a sacred tree once stood, known as a holy site that radiates especially strong energy. Enshrining Amaterasu-Omikami and the three Kumano deities, it is beloved for wide-ranging blessings such as academic success, good fortune, business prosperity, and protection from misfortune, a power spot close to central Naha.

Highlights

  • Mount Tento Sacred Grove: A sacred site on a rise within the grounds, said to hold the strongest power at Okinogu, where worshippers offer prayers.
  • Vermilion Halls: The vivid halls give off a dignified presence within the green grove.
  • Nature of Onoyama Park: Wrapped in a spacious park, a setting perfect for a stroll and refreshment.
  • History of Safe Voyages: Its history as a guardian of Naha Port conveys the connection with the seas of Okinawa to this day.
