Ureshino Onsen โ One of Japan's Three Great Beauty Hot Springs
Ureshino Onsen โ One of Japan's Three Great Beauty Hot Springs
Nestled in a valley where the Ureshino River winds past weeping willows and ryokan gardens, Ureshino Onsen has been celebrated for over 1,300 years as one of Japan's most skin-beautifying hot springs. The alkaline waters โ with a high pH level that literally dissolves the surface proteins of skin, leaving it silky smooth โ have earned Ureshino its legendary status among beauty-conscious bathers.
Highlights
The spring water here is colorless and odorless, with an alkaline pH of around 9.4 that makes it feel almost slippery against the skin. Long-term bathing enthusiasts call it "bijin-no-yu" (water of beautiful people). The main onsen street runs along the river, lined with traditional ryokan offering private and public baths with views of the willow-draped banks. Shioyu no Yu is the most historic public bathhouse, dating to the Edo period. Ureshino is also the birthplace of a unique local specialty: onsen-cha, tea brewed directly in the hot spring water instead of plain hot water, giving it a mellow, slightly mineral finish. The surrounding hills grow some of Saga's finest green tea, and the combination of tea tasting and bathing is a distinctive Ureshino ritual.
Getting There & Tips
From Hakata Station, take the JR Nagasaki Main Line limited express to Takeo Onsen, then transfer to the Matsuura Railway to Ureshino-onsen Station (total about 1.5 hours). Alternatively, highway buses run directly from Fukuoka's Tenjin Bus Terminal in about 1.5 hours. Day-trip bathing is available at most ryokan for a fee of ยฅ500โยฅ1,500. Staying overnight to enjoy dinner and a private bath is highly recommended.
Best Time to Visit
Ureshino is lovely in all seasons. New tea leaves emerge in AprilโMay, making spring the best time for fresh tea tasting. Summer evenings along the lit riverside are romantic. Autumn foliage reflects in the river. Winter is the classic hot spring season, when the contrast between cold air and steaming water is most satisfying.
