Access
By public transportation: No direct bus from JR Saga Station to Kusenbu-zan is officially listed. The Kyushu Nature Trail "Saga Michi" guide recommends taking a taxi from JR Shin-Tosu Station (about 50 minutes to the Kusenbu-zan parking lot), or a Nishitetsu Bus from JR Tosu Station (Shiminnomori bound, 27 minutes) plus a 6-minute walk to the Manzaiji parking lot, then a 25-minute walk to Manzaiji. Checking the timetable in advance on the web or by phone gives peace of mind.
By car: About 1 hour 20 minutes from within Saga City to the Kusenbu-zan parking lot (about 50 minutes to the Mitarai-no-Taki parking lot, about 1 hour to the Manzaiji parking lot). Tenzan

The foliage catching the western sun at an angle shines a deep burning red, and a fantastical time arrives when the whole mountain is dyed orange. Try comparing both the morning and afternoon expressions if possible.
Local Ways to Enjoy Multiple courses are set along Tenzan's trails, ranging from relatively gentle routes for beginners to full-fledged traverse courses for hikers confident in their stamina. What veteran local hikers secretly recommend is "the route traversing from Tenzan to the Sefuri mountain system." Access
By car: About 50 to 60 minutes from within Saga City via national and prefectural roads. There is a trailhead with car access to near the summit, and parking is also maintained. No official announcement of temporary parking lots for the foliage season has been confirmed. The parking areas are small (around 20 cars each), so aim to arrive early.
By public transportation: Since bus routes to Tenzan are limited, using a rental car or taxi is realistic. Building a plan to rent a car around Saga Station and head there greatly increases your freedom of movement.
Tip for Travelers The area near Tenzan's summit often has strong winds, and the perceived temperature difference from flat ground is greater than you imagine. The recommended time is until around 10 a.m.. During the time when morning light streams into the mountain stream, the glittering of the water surface and the colors of the foliage overlap, and your hand taking photos won't stop. The afternoon, when the angle of light changes, has its charm too, but if you seek more fantastical scenery, choose the morning without hesitation.
Local Ways to Enjoy Nanayama is a satoyama village where agriculture is also thriving. In autumn, direct sales of new rice and seasonal vegetables are held in various places, and dropping by a farm-direct market on the way back from a foliage stroll is the connoisseur's way to enjoy. If you take home glossy Saga-grown rice or vegetables with soil still on them as souvenirs, you can recall Nanayama's autumn at home too. And for a body chilled from strolling, the village's hot spring is just right. There is no facility called "Nanayama Onsen": the bathhouse here is Narukami Onsen Nanano-yu (1150 Nanayama Takigawa, Karatsu City, tel. 0955-70-7070). Access
By public transportation + walking: Use a bus from JR Karatsu Station and get off at the bus stop in the Nanayama district. From the bus stop, about a 10- to 15-minute walk to the entrance of the gorge strolling path. The travel time from Karatsu Station, including bus ride time, is a guide of about 40 to 50 minutes. However, since the number of buses is very limited, be sure to check the round-trip timetable in advance. If you miss the return bus, you may end up waiting a long time for the next one.
By car: About 30 to 40 minutes from the Karatsu city area. Free parking lots are also maintained within the Nanayama district, and access by car is the most convenient. It is relatively uncrowded even on weekends, so visiting on a drive is also recommended.
Tip for Travelers Since Nanayama is an area with leisurely tourist infrastructure, there are almost no commercial facilities like convenience stores. Prepare drinks, light meals, and cash before departure in the Karatsu city area or elsewhere.
