Yodohime Shrine

Yodohime Shrine, set beside Kawakami Gorge in Yamato, Saga City, Saga Prefecture, is an ancient shrine with a history of more than a thousand years. A fragment of the Hizen no Kuni Fudoki records its enshrinement in the reign of Emperor Kinmei, and it appears in the Engishiki register, revered as the first shrine of the former Hizen province. Its deity, Yodohime no Kami, is said to be the younger sister of Empress Jingu, or the same as Toyotamahime, and is widely worshipped as a deity of water and the sea. The precincts, embraced by scenic Kawakami Gorge โ€” nicknamed the Arashiyama of Kyushu โ€” are filled with pure air and the sound of running water, making it a power spot that quietly settles the hearts of visitors.

Highlights

  • Shrine buildings beside Kawakami Gorge, an open space where you can pray along with the sound of the clear stream.
  • The refreshing atmosphere unique to a shrine enshrining a water deity, with pure air drifting through the precincts.
  • Old trees and stone objects that tell of long history, conveying its dignity as the first shrine of Hizen.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the cherry blossoms that color Kawakami Gorge are splendid, and the flowers reflected on the water are beautiful. In summer you can feel coolness beside the clear stream, and in autumn colored leaves dye the gorge. In winter you can pray quietly in the clear air. The seasonal scenery shifting with the river is its charm.
