Aburahi Shrine

Aburahi Shrine in Koka City is an old shrine said to predate the Heian period, and from medieval times it was deeply revered by the Koka warriors as the head shrine of Koka district. Known as the god of oil and fire, it is a rare shrine that has gathered faith from people in the oil trade across the country. A complete set of Muromachi period halls, including the main hall, worship hall, tower gate, and corridors, survives to this day, all designated as Important Cultural Properties. Used as a filming location for period dramas, it is a quiet, profound hidden spot wrapped in stillness.

Highlights

- A precious group of nationally designated Important Cultural Property buildings, with Muromachi period halls surviving together. - A graceful layout where corridors extend left and right from the tower gate, giving the feeling of stepping back in time. - An umbrella pine over 700 years old rising in the grounds, a stately giant tree designated as a prefectural natural monument.

Enjoying the Seasons

The grounds wrapped in deep green feel especially refreshing in the season of new leaves, where you can quietly face history. In autumn the trees take on color, and their harmony with the aged halls deepens the mood all the more.

Access and Basic Information

- Convenient to reach on foot or by car from Aburahi Station on the JR Kusatsu Line. - Accessible by car from the Koka Tsuchiyama interchange on the Shin Meishin Expressway. - Set in a quiet mountain valley, allowing for a relaxed visit.

A Quick Tip

The view of the halls aligned in a straight row stands out most when admired carefully from in front of the tower gate. It is a perfect hidden spot for those who want to slowly savor historic architecture.
