Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle โ Japan's Largest Lake and the Waterways of Omihachiman
Lake Biwa and Hikone Castle โ Japan's Largest Lake and Omihachiman Waterways
Shiga Prefecture is defined by Lake Biwa, the vast ancient lake that covers one-sixth of the prefecture's total area. Around its shores, a remarkable concentration of historical, cultural, and natural attractions awaits โ none more celebrated than Hikone Castle, one of only four surviving original castles in Japan designated as National Treasures, and the charming canal town of Omihachiman.
Highlights
Hikone Castle crowns a low hill above the lake's eastern shore with a quiet confidence that belies its extraordinary historical significance. Built in the early 17th century, its three-storey keep has survived wars, earthquakes, and the Meiji government's policy of demolishing feudal castles largely intact. The interiors, accessible to visitors, preserve original fittings and display a remarkable collection of armour and weapons from the Ii clan, the lords of Hikone. The surrounding castle gardens, particularly Genkyuen โ a traditional strolling garden with a central pond reflecting the keep โ add a layer of refinement to the experience.
From the castle hill, views stretch across Lake Biwa to the Hira mountain range beyond, particularly beautiful at sunrise and in autumn. The castle's mascot character, Hikonyan, appears at scheduled times for visitor photos, beloved by children and adults alike.
Omihachiman, easily combined with Hikone in a single day, offers the complementary pleasures of canal boat rides, Vories architecture, and the living streetscape of an Edo-period merchant town. The Hachiman-bori canal and surrounding historic streets represent one of the finest preserved townscapes in central Japan.
Lake Biwa itself supports a unique ecosystem with over 1,000 endemic species, and the lakeside cycling path (Biwako Cycling Road) offers a superb way to experience the water's edge at leisure.
Getting There & Tips
From Kyoto, take the JR Biwako Line to Hikone Station (about 45 minutes). Hikone Castle is a 15-minute walk from the station. Omihachiman is 15 minutes back toward Kyoto on the same line. The IC card is accepted on local buses. Allow a full day to visit both towns comfortably.
Best Time to Visit
Spring cherry blossoms around Hikone Castle are famous throughout Japan. Autumn brings vivid foliage and clear lake views. Summer is warm but the lake breezes make outdoor exploration manageable.
