Amaharashi Coast is a spectacular spot where the Tateyama mountain range rises beyond Toyama Bay, a rare view even in the world of "the sea and 3,000 m peaks visible at the same time."

• Access: about 25 minutes by bus from Tateyama Station, then about a 30-minute walk from the Shomyo Falls parking lot

4. Kurobe Dam | A Man-Made Spectacle of Emerald Green

The arch-shaped dam body of Kurobe Dam, and the emerald-green lake surface spreading behind it, are so beautiful they don't seem man-made. The white spray of the sightseeing discharge is spectacular in a word.

• Photogenic point: The transparent, overflowing emerald-green lake and the majestic figure of Mt. Tsurugi behind it make a fine picture
• Best season and time: The sightseeing-discharge period from June to October. In the morning it's easy to avoid backlighting and you can take sharp photos
• Shooting angle: Emphasize the curving beauty of the whole dam from a downward-looking angle from the observation deck
• Access: about 16 minutes by electric bus from Ogizawa Station

5. Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Villages | Wander into Japan's Original Landscape

The Ainokura and Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Villages are a World Heritage village alongside Shirakawa-go. The scenery of lights glowing in the snow-deep winter and the all-white village is beautiful, just like a picture postcard.

• Photogenic point: The "light-up," with window lights glowing on the snow-clad gassho-zukuri houses, is a fantastical other world
• Best season and time: After sunset during the winter light-up period in January to February, during the blue-moment hours
• Shooting angle: Look down on the village from a slightly elevated point, and capturing multiple gassho roofs as if overlapping raises the sense of depth
• Access: about 1 to 1.5 hours by bus from Takaoka Station or Kanazawa Station
