We will guide you to these three foliage spots that Yamanashi is proud of, from a uniquely local perspective. Shosenkyo

Praised as "Japan's most beautiful gorge," Shosenkyo is a roughly 4-km-long valley located in the northwest of Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Strange rocks and giant boulders, carved over long ages by the erosion of granite, tower on both sides, and when autumn arrives at those powerful rock faces, bright red maples and golden-leaved maples color the scene as if winding around them. If you walk slowly along the well-maintained promenade that follows the mountain stream, the contrast of rock and foliage that changes its expression with every step is something you will never tire of, no matter how many times you stop.

And the highlight of this course is Sengataki Falls, boasting a drop of about 30 meters. The moment when the white spray and the blazing foliage overlap right before your eyes makes the heart tremble, no matter how often you visit. It is an extraordinary scene, as if you had wandered into the world of a Japanese painting. Because the maples along the promenade turn color one after another during the foliage season, searching for "where is the most beautiful today" as you walk is one of the pleasures.

Best Season and Recommended Hours The peak is usually mid-October to late November (Yamanashi Tourism Organization, elevation 720 m). Because of its elevation difference, Shosenkyo's season lasts over a month, so when planning a "foliage itinerary" combined with the foot of Mt. Fuji and Nishizawa Valley, we recommend visiting it as the finale. Around 9 a.m., the sunlight pours softly into the gorge, and the golden time when the foliage reflects on the mountain stream - the "reflection" - looks most beautiful. After 4 p.m. the sun fades, and you can face the foliage in calm, settled stillness. Both time slots are as peaceful as if the daytime bustle had never existed, and they are hours we strongly recommend to photography lovers as well.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy and Hidden Gems Many tourists tend to cluster near the entrance of the promenade, but if you extend your walk to the ropeway summit area above Sengataki Falls, you can take in a magnificent panorama of the entire Kofu Basin colored by autumn foliage. This observation deck, quietly named by locals as a favorite scenic spot, is actually surprisingly little visited. The aerial stroll from the ropeway, offering a bird's-eye view of the carpet of foliage, is also an exceptional experience. In addition, workshops of Yamanashi's traditional craft, Koshu crystal and gemstone carving, are scattered along the gorge, and there are hands-on workshops where you can watch artisans' skills up close or even handcraft a one-of-a-kind accessory. We recommend it as a travel memory to keep alongside the memory of the foliage.

Access

• Train and Bus: From the south exit, platform 4 of JR Chuo Main Line "Kofu Station," take the Yamanashi Kotsu bus (not the north exit). About 30 minutes to Shosenkyo-guchi, about 30 minutes to Tenjinmori, about 40 minutes to Green Line, and about 60 minutes to Taki-ue. From the Shosenkyo-guchi bus stop you can start right onto the promenade along the gorge. The appeal of using the bus is comfortable access with no worry about traffic jams.
• Car: About 30 minutes from "Kofu-Showa IC" on the Chuo Expressway. It is convenient to set "Shosenkyo Green Line" as the destination on your car navigation.
• Tips for Travelers: On weekends and holidays during foliage season, parking lots often fill up early, so you will want to arrive by 8-9 a.m. Using the bus from Kofu Station lets you completely avoid traffic jams and is comfortable. The promenade is paved, but some sections along the stream have wet stone paving, so we recommend non-slip-soled sneakers or trekking shoes. Temperatures drop sharply in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to bring a layer you can throw on.

The Foot of Mt. Fuji

Walking slowly through blazing foliage while feeling the majestic figure of the World Heritage Mt. Fuji up close - such a luxurious experience awaits at the foot of Mt. Fuji. In the Fuji Five Lakes area, you may witness the "inverted autumn-foliage Fuji," a sublime sight admired by photographers worldwide, in which the upside-down Fuji and the foliage are reflected on the lake surface at the same time. The three-color contrast of clear blue autumn sky, white summit, and the red-and-yellow brocade of autumn is deeply etched into the hearts of those who see it. Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka in particular are highly popular foliage spots, and the way the trees surrounding the lakes turn color all at once looks like a giant painting prepared by nature itself.

Beyond strolling along the lakeshores, several hiking courses are also maintained, and a major appeal is being able to enjoy both the ever-changing expressions of Mt. Fuji and the foliage as you walk. Those confident in their legs should by all means try trekking up "Mt. Mitsutoge" or "Mt. Tenjo." The view of Mt. Fuji and the foliage looking down from the summit gives an entirely different kind of emotion than the view from the lakeshore.

Best Season and Recommended Hours The viewing time varies greatly by elevation. The Mt. Fuji 5th Station (2,305 m) peaks from late September to mid-October; the Lake Yamanaka Literary Forest area (981 m) peaks from mid-October to early November; and Momiji Corridor and Momiji Tunnel (830 m, lakeside) peak from early to mid-November (Yamanashi Tourism Organization). Above all we recommend early morning. The lake surface tends to fall mirror-still on calm-wind mornings, when the reflection of the inverted Fuji and the foliage can be photographed most beautifully. In the clear air just after sunrise, the scene woven by a faintly red-tinged Mt. Fuji and the colored trees will surely become a memory etched for a lifetime. In the afternoon the wind tends to pick up and ruffle the lake surface, so if you are aiming for reflections, rising early is essential.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy and Hidden Gems Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka draw many tourists on weekends, but the area around Lake Saiko, located a bit to the west, is relatively quiet and is known among locals as a hidden gem where you can have Mt. Fuji and the foliage leisurely to yourself. In particular, "Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba" is a picturesque place where a hamlet of thatched-roof old farmhouses collaborates with the foliage. In this area, which recreates the rural scenery of the Edo period, you can also savor hand-cut hoto using local autumn delicacies and wine made at the foot of Mt. Fuji. For those who want to step a little away from the touristy bustle and feel Yamanashi's "village autumn," this is a spot we would love you to drop by.

Access

• Train and Bus: From Fujikyuko Line "Kawaguchiko Station," you can access each lakeshore and hiking-course entrance by retro bus or local bus. Using the limited express "Fuji Excursion" from Shinjuku, you can get there with no transfers in about 1 hour 45 minutes, so access is excellent.
• Car: About 5-20 minutes from "Kawaguchiko IC" on the Chuo Expressway to each spot. To Lake Saiko it is about 15 minutes from Kawaguchiko IC.
• Tips for Travelers: On weekends during foliage season, the roads around Lake Kawaguchi get especially congested, and just searching for parking can take more than an hour. Temporary parking lots are sometimes set up, but the locations change from year to year, so we strongly recommend checking the latest information in advance on the official Yamanashi Prefecture tourism website. Early-morning arrival or using public transportation is wise. There are also bicycle rental shops near Kawaguchiko Station, and leisurely cycling along the lakeshore while enjoying the foliage is a uniquely local style.

Nishizawa Valley

Worthy of being called "Yamanashi's secret realm," Nishizawa Valley is a gorge cradled in the heart of the Okuchichibu mountains, where almost untouched primeval nature breathes. Designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, locals unanimously say this area is most beautiful in autumn, when the primeval forest of beech and maple is dyed gold and crimson. The famous "Nanatsugama Godan-no-Taki" (Seven Cauldrons Five-Tiered Falls) in particular, where the emerald-green plunge pools overlap with the blazing foliage, offers a mystical scenery you can encounter nowhere else. A serene, profound beauty - different again from the grandeur of Shosenkyo or the openness of the foot of Mt. Fuji - draws you step by step deeper into the gorge.

For those who think, "I want to avoid the crowds and savor the foliage to my heart's content amid genuine nature," this is a place we can recommend with confidence. The loop course that takes about four hours to walk all the way around the gorge - where the valley's beauty changes its expression the more you walk and cleanses the heart - may well be called the most "luxurious time" in autumn Yamanashi.

Best Season and Recommended Hours The peak is usually mid-October to early November. Because of the high altitude, it begins to color early among Yamanashi's foliage spots, alongside the foot of Mt. Fuji. In the morning, light pours into the gorge at a good angle, and the collaboration of the "shower of light" sparkling as it reflects off the water surface and the foliage is superb. To complete the roughly four-hour loop trekking course, it is ideal to enter the trail by 9 a.m. If you enter in the afternoon, the return may grow dim, so be especially careful with time management during the short-day season of autumn.

Uniquely Local Ways to Enjoy and Hidden Gems "Michi-no-Eki Mitomi," right beside the gorge entrance, is a treasure trove lined with vegetables grown in Yamanashi City, handmade jam, famous Yamanashi sweets, and more. If you drop in to choose souvenirs after descending, you can take home plenty of local bounty. Also, the area around the suspension bridge "Teisen-no-Taki" within the gorge sees few tourists, a hidden spot where you can nearly monopolize the fantastical scenery created by moss-covered rocks and blazing foliage. Since it is not prominently marked on the official map, the trick is to walk consciously so as not to miss it. After trekking, soaking in a day-trip hot spring in Yamanashi City is the local way to finish. Whether a facility called "Nishizawa Keikoku Onsen" actually exists near the gorge could not be confirmed from official sources — check with the Yamanashi City Tourism Division (0553-22-1111) before relying on it. The sensation of tired muscles gradually loosening is an autumn pleasure handed down for generations by the people of Yamanashi, who dearly love both mountain climbing and hot springs.

Access

• Train and Bus: From JR Chuo Main Line "Yamanashishi Station," take the Yamanashi City municipal bus (about 60 minutes to "Nishizawa Keikoku Iriguchi"). From JR "Enzan (Koshu) Station," take the Yamanashi Kotsu bus (also about 60 minutes). Both routes take about 60 minutes, not 40–50 minutes. However, since buses are very infrequent, be sure to check the timetable in advance before making your plans. On weekends during foliage season, extra services are sometimes operated.
• Car: About 45 minutes from "Katsunuma IC" on the Chuo Expressway. There is a free parking lot near the gorge entrance, but as capacity is limited, early-morning arrival is recommended.
• Tips for Travelers: Inside the gorge there are continuous rocky areas, steep slopes, and muddy mountain trails, so trekking shoes are essential. Entering the trail in sneakers or leather shoes is dangerous, so avoid it. In rain and after rain, the rocks become extremely slippery, so you need more caution than usual underfoot. Bring plenty of drinking water and trail food (rice balls, energy bars, etc.), and prepare an extra layer of warm clothing as well. Mountain weather can change suddenly, so we strongly recommend tucking a compact rain jacket into your pack. There are no shops or vending machines inside the gorge, so the preparation you make before entering the trail will determine the comfort of your trip.

Peak Foliage Times and How to Enjoy It

The greatest appeal of Yamanashi's foliage is the freedom to craft a "foliage itinerary" that cleverly takes advantage of the differences in altitude. To organize the typical schedule, the foot of Mt. Fuji and Nishizawa Valley begin to color in mid-to-late October, while Shosenkyo reaches its peak in late October to mid-November. By making use of this timing gap, even on a one-night, two-day trip you can visit multiple spots each at its own peak timing, realizing a luxurious journey as if chasing the deepening of autumn.

If you want to cleverly avoid crowds, an early-morning visit on a weekday is the best secret tactic above all. The foliage seen in the soft morning light radiates a fantastical glow entirely different from daytime, and you can face nature at length in the stillness while there are still few tourists. Autumn Yamanashi has very large temperature differences between mornings/evenings and midday, and it is not unusual for mornings to drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Be sure to prepare clothing you can layer and a windbreaker.

To finish off your trip, don't forget the gourmet foods unique to Yamanashi. Celebrate the autumn harvest with Koshu wine, soothe your travel fatigue with "hoto," whose chewy noodles and abundant vegetables warm the body, and add a sweet lingering note to your travel memories with the sweetness of Shingen mochi. Nishizawa Gorge (Mitomi, Yamanashi City) — Already Open from 29 April 2026

The former forest railway track (trolley track) used as the return path is well maintained and easy to walk, according to a feature page on the Yamanashi Tourism Organisation's website. No individual access restrictions on this track had been announced as of 6 September 2026.

Shosenkyo Gorge (Kofu City)

• Peak foliage: Mid-October to late November (Yamanashi Tourism Organisation; elevation 720 m; the elevation difference means the season lasts for over a month)
• Gorge trail: Approx. 4 km from Shosenkyo-guchi to above Sengado Falls (Sengadaki)
• Free car parks: Tenjinmori City Car Park (approx. 60 regular car spaces, with toilets) / Prefecture-run Green Line Car Park (37 regular car spaces, 10 bus spaces, with toilets). Kofu City's official site notes that the Green Line Car Park "becomes congested during peak season"

Fujikawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival 2026 — Dates Confirmed

During the festival period, the tourism federation's official site states only that the venue is "within walking distance of the loop bus stop," with no announcement about whether a shuttle bus will run or any timetable. The number of spaces and charges for the festival venue car park are also not stated officially, so for on-the-day car park information please call 0555-28-5177.

Fuji Subaru Line — Private Car Restrictions for 2026 End on 10 September

• 2026 private car restriction period: Friday 3 July 2026, 18:00 – Thursday 10 September 2026, 18:00 (Yamanashi Prefecture official flyer)
• This means no private car restrictions are in place during the foliage season (late September to mid-October). You can drive up to the 5th station by car
