Nagato Shrine, a Deep Mountain Ascetic Power Spot in Yamanashi

🗻 Yamanashi|June 24, 2026

Nagato Shrine

Nagato Shrine sits deep in the mountains of Yamanashi City, Yamanashi. An old mountain faith shrine truly worthy of being called a hidden region, its halls appear at the end of a path that climbs along a clear stream. Its founding legends tell of Yamato Takeru opening the inner shrine during his eastern campaign and of En no Gyoja, the founder of mountain asceticism, establishing a training ground here, though it is often dated to a transfer of the deity in the first year of the Yoro era.

Simply walking the path wrapped in deep forest, with the sound of the clear stream, gives a sense of the heart being washed clean. In recent years more worshipers have come even from outside the prefecture to pray for children, and it has drawn attention as a lesser-known power spot of great efficacy.

Highlights

- A mystical path that climbs along a clear mountain stream - An old mountain faith shrine with legends of Yamato Takeru and En no Gyoja - The clean air wrapped in deep forest - Blessings of great efficacy, including prayers for children

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring fresh green colors the gorge and a vivid scene spreads with the sound of the clear stream. In summer the forest and stream bring coolness, making the walk along the path pleasant. In autumn the surrounding trees turn to red and gold and the whole path is wrapped in color. In winter snow can make worship difficult, so it is wise to check conditions before you go.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Mitomi, Yamanashi City, Yamanashi - Access: By car from JR Enzan Station, then on foot along the path from the parking area - Parking: Use the lot near the start of the path - Admission: Free

A Quick Tip

The path is a mountain trail along a stream, and you must walk to reach the halls. Wear sturdy shoes and plan with time to spare. Footing is slick after rain and in winter, so take care. It is a place well suited to quietly savoring nature and holiness within a deep forest.
