Koshu Grapes: A Land of Many Varieties on Alluvial Fans

đŸ—» Yamanashi|July 1, 2026

Koshu Grapes

Yamanashi is known as one of the foremost grape growing regions in all of Japan. A combination of conditions, including well drained alluvial fans, abundant sunshine, and a wide gap between day and night temperatures, produces grapes with a strong sweetness. From the long cultivated Koshu variety to Kyoho, Shine Muscat, and Delaware, a rich array of varieties ripens one after another.

Highlights

The hilly country where Yamanashi vineyards spread out becomes a lovely sight in season, when trellises hung with clusters stretch into the distance. At sightseeing orchards, you can taste grapes picked on the spot or try your hand at grape picking. Because sweetness, aroma, and texture differ from one variety to the next, there is pleasure in finding a favorite cluster by tasting and comparing.

Enjoying the Seasons

Grapes are at their best from late summer into autumn, and during this period many people visit with grape picking in mind. Since harvest times stagger from early ripening varieties to late ones, you can chase the peak season over a long stretch. At direct sales stands, freshly picked grapes can be bought at reasonable prices.

Access and Basic Information

Sightseeing orchards are scattered in great numbers around Katsunuma in the city of Koshu and the city of Fuefuki. Katsunuma Budokyo Station and Isawaonsen Station on the JR Chuo Main Line serve as starting points, and by car the Katsunuma or Ichinomiya Misaka interchanges on the Chuo Expressway are convenient. Orchards grow crowded at harvest time, so an early start is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Since each variety is available only during a limited window for picking, checking its peak season in advance brings peace of mind if you have a favorite in mind. Many direct sales stands offer samples, so it is wise to taste before you choose.
