Yamanashi isn't just about Mt. Fuji and stunning natural scenery! As a kingdom of fruit, it is packed with colorful sweets and gourmet foods that make you want to snap a photo. This article covers Kikyo Shingen Mochi, Hoto Fudo, Moegi-no-Mura ROCK, Katsunuma Budono Oka and Yamanashi Prefecture Fuefukigawa Fruit Park.

1. Kikyo Shingen Mochi โ€” Kikyoya Factory Outlet

A spot where Shingen Mochi, Yamanashi's quintessential souvenir, can be found at bargain prices at the factory outlet. The "Shingen Mochi all-you-can-stuff experience," where you fill a transparent bag as full as possible, is super photogenic โ€” the colorful individual wrappers piling up make for a delightful shot. Shoot in the soft natural light of first thing in the morning to beautifully bring out the translucency of the mochi and the gold of the kinako (roasted soybean flour). The go-to Instagram-worthy approach is a straight-down overhead shot taken the moment your bag is stuffed full.

2. Hoto Fudo โ€” Higashikoiji Branch (Fujikawaguchiko Town)

Hoto, Yamanashi's local specialty dish packed with kabocha squash, seasonal vegetables, and wide flat noodles. The Higashikoiji branch is recognizable by its cloud-like white curved building, making the architecture itself a photogenic star alongside the food. Aim for a window seat during the bright daytime hours โ€” natural light reflecting off the bowl creates a dramatic shot. Tilt at a 45-degree angle to get the whole bowl in frame and catch the steam too, and you'll have a warm and inviting photograph.

3. Moegi-no-Mura ROCK โ€” Kiyosato Highland

The soft-serve ice cream at the restaurant in "Moegi-no-Mura," the artisan village in Kiyosato Highland, is an exceptional photogenic sweet. A shot of the pure white, rich-milk soft-serve set against the lush green scenery of Kiyosato spreading out in the background looks like a scene from a picture book. The best time is a clear morning in early summer through summer with a wide-open blue sky. Hold the soft-serve up and shoot from a low angle together with the sky โ€” the "low-angle sky pairing" shot is the way to go.

4. Katsunuma Budono Oka โ€” Underground Wine Cave (Koshu City)

A symbol of Koshu City, surrounded on all 360 degrees by vineyards. The underground wine cave stocks 150โ€“200 labels of Koshu City-produced wine that have passed the city's review board at all times, and a shot taken in front of the rows of bottles โ€” tastevin (silver tasting vessel, 1,500 yen) in hand โ€” is fit to be the star of any trip. From the top of the hill, you can take in a panoramic view of the Kofu Basin, and the best photography opportunity is in the time just before sunset in autumn, when orange light pours in.

5. Yamanashi Prefecture Fuefukigawa Fruit Park โ€” A Hilltop Overlooking the Kofu Basin (Yamanashi City)

A prefectural park in Yamanashi City that symbolizes "Yamanashi, the Kingdom of Fruit." Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Kofu Basin, the grounds are open for free exploration. The harvest season from July through September, when vivid red peaches, purple Kyoho grapes, and golden Shine Muscat ripen, sees surrounding fruit farms and farm-direct stands dotting the Fruit Line. Place the fruit or sweets you've bought on a white plate, shoot from a slightly diagonal angle above together with the scenery, and you'll have an appetizing, Instagram-worthy photo.

The photogenic food of Yamanashi is a treasure trove packed with nature's bounty and local culture. Head there yourself and find your own one-of-a-kind shot.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Opening hours / closing days: Hoto Fudo Higashikoiji branch is open 11:00-20:00 (it may close as soon as the noodles run out, so call ahead if you are going in the evening or later). The factory outlet and the fill-your-own-bag sales at Kikyoya are limited in quantity, and whether they are held varies from day to day. The opening hours of Moeginomura ROCK, Katsunuma Budo-no-Oka and the Yamanashi Prefectural Fuefukigawa Fruit Park also change with the season, so check their official websites.
  • Budget and prices: At the underground wine cave of Katsunuma Budo-no-Oka, buying the tastevin tasting cup costs 1,500 yen. Between 150 and 200 labels are available for tasting at any time.
  • Access: Hoto Fudo Higashikoiji branch = 2458 Funatsu-Higashikoiji, Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun. Moeginomura = Kiyosato, Takane-cho, Hokuto City, within walking distance of Kiyosato Station. Katsunuma Budo-no-Oka = Katsunuma-cho, Koshu City, within walking distance up the hill from JR Katsunuma-Budokyo Station. Yamanashi Prefectural Fuefukigawa Fruit Park = 1488 Esobara, Yamanashi City, about 7 minutes by taxi or municipal bus from JR Yamanashi-shi Station (about 30 minutes by car from the Ichinomiya-Misaka IC or Katsunuma IC on the Chuo Expressway).
  • Parking: Yamanashi is essentially an area you get around by car. Check each facility's official website for the number of parking spaces and the hours they can be used. If you plan to taste wine, do not forget to arrange a designated driver.
  • Photography etiquette: At factory outlets and shops, photographing the products or the interior may be restricted. At the fill-your-own-bag sales, be considerate and avoid capturing other participants in your shots. The underground wine cave is dark, so always ask the staff whether flash and tripods are permitted.
  • Points to note: Hoto Fudo has four branches in Fujikawaguchiko-machi (Kawaguchiko Kita main store, Higashikoiji, Kawaguchiko Minami, and Kawaguchiko Ekimae) and none in Fujiyoshida City. The Yamanashi Prefectural Fuefukigawa Fruit Park is in Yamanashi City, not in "Fuefuki City".

* Opening hours and prices are subject to change. Please check each official website before your visit.
