Akita Prefecture is home to breathtaking scenery that stops you in your tracks. Deep forests, mysterious lakes, majestic mountain ranges — here are five handpicked locations where you'll want to grab your camera and head out the door.

1. Lake Tazawa — A "Cobalt Blue Miracle" Born from Japan's Deepest Waters

Lake Tazawa, boasting Japan's greatest depth, radiates an overwhelming presence through its deep cobalt blue born of its extraordinary clarity. Capture the golden Tatsuko statue standing at the lake's edge together with the blue of the water in a single frame, and you have an image that feels like the world of mythology.

• Best time and season: Spring through early summer, when morning light streams in. The lake surface shines most vividly then.
• Shooting angle: Use a low angle with the Tatsuko statue in the foreground to emphasize the expanse of the lake.
• Access: About 10 minutes by Ugo Kotsu Bus from JR Tazawako Station to "Tazawako-han." To reach Katajiri, where the Tatsuko statue stands, take the Tazawako Circular Line bus for about a further 25 minutes (service is infrequent, so be sure to check the timetable in advance).

2. Oga Peninsula / Nyudozaki Cape — Dramatic Sunsets Over the Sea of Japan

Nyudozaki Cape, located at the northwestern tip of the Oga Peninsula. The landscape where a vast grassy hill slopes down to the sea is a photogenic place where every angle you frame becomes a picture. At dusk, the horizon blazes deep red — social media gold!

• Best time and season: The golden hour in the evening; from autumn through winter, the colors of the sunset become especially deep.
• Shooting angle: Framing the Nyudozaki Lighthouse — known for its distinctive black-and-white stripes — as a silhouette is popular. Internal access to the lighthouse is typically open late April to early November, 9:00–16:00 (paid), and visitors cannot climb it in winter.
• Access: Take a local bus line or the reservation-based shared taxi "Namahage Shuttle" from a JR Oga Line station (roughly 30–50 minutes). Service is limited, so book in advance and confirm the timetable.

3. Dakigaeri Gorge — A Magical Valley of Emerald Green

"Dakigaeri Gorge" — as the name implies, a remote gorge where the mountain path is so narrow that people passing each other must embrace (dakiau) to get by. During the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn foliage, the emerald green of the mountain stream and the colors of the surrounding trees overlap to create a world like a painting.

• Best time and season: In the soft morning light. Late October through early November, when autumn foliage is at its peak, is especially recommended.
• Shooting angle: Looking down at the mountain stream from a bridge on the walking trail emphasizes the transparency of the water. Note: Semboku City advises that "going alone is dangerous — always travel in a group of two or more" due to frequent bear sightings in the area. Tap the metal pipes along the trail to announce your presence.
• Access: About 15 minutes by car from JR Kakunodate Station. The on-demand bus "Yobunoru Kakunodate" is also available. The walking trail and parking area restrooms are closed for winter from around mid-November to mid-April each year; spring reopening is subject to safety checks.

4. Mt. Chokai — Hunt for the "Mountain in the Sky" Floating Above the Sea of Clouds

Mt. Chokai, straddling Akita and Yamagata Prefectures at an elevation of 2,236 m and praised as the "Dewa Fuji," is proud of its beautiful profile. When a sea of clouds forms at dawn, the summit appears to float above the clouds, creating a dreamlike spectacular view.

• Best time and season: Early morning right after sunrise; clear autumn days tend to have a higher rate of sea-of-clouds formation.
• Shooting angle: From the roadside station "Kisakata" or the Hokodate Observation Platform, capture the full panorama in landscape orientation alongside the sea of clouds.
• Access: About 30 minutes by car from JR Kisakata Station (to the Hokodate Observation Platform / Hokodate Trailhead). The Chokai Blue Line leading to Hokodate is closed in winter, so check the opening status before visiting.

5. Hachimantai Dragon Eye — A Mystical Eye That Appears Only Once a Year

The "Dragon Eye," which appears only in early spring at Kagamike Pond on the Hachimantai plateau, is created when melting snow and water overlap to produce a fantastical pattern resembling a dragon's pupil. Its rarity — lasting only a few weeks — adds to its photogenic appeal.

• Best time and season: Typically May–June; the timing of the "opening" changes year by year depending on how the snow melts. The Hachimantai Aspite Line and Jukkai Line are closed in winter from approximately early November through mid-April each year; even after they open, nighttime travel is restricted until late May.
• Shooting angle: Frame the circular shape of the pupil in its entirety from a high vantage point looking straight down.
• Access: About 20 minutes on foot from the Hachimantai Summit Rest House. The path is almost entirely snow-covered, with slopes of about 1 meter of accumulated snow, so snow-appropriate footwear and a windproof layer are essential. Injuries from falls occur every year, and an ambulance takes about an hour to arrive.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: For Lake Tazawa, spring to early summer in the morning when the light comes in. For Cape Nyudo, the golden hour in the evening. For Dakigaeri Gorge, the fresh greenery and the autumn foliage from late October to early November. The Hachimantai Dragon Eye usually appears from May to June, and the timing of the "opening of the eye" changes from year to year depending on how far the snowmelt has progressed.
• Opening hours / operating periods: The Nyudozaki Lighthouse is usually open to visitors from late April to early November, 9:00-16:00 (you cannot climb it in winter). The walking trail at Dakigaeri Gorge and the toilets in its parking lot are usually closed for the winter from mid-November to mid-April, and the spring reopening comes after safety checks. The Hachimantai Aspite Line and Jukai Line are usually closed for the winter from early November to mid-April, and even after they reopen they remain closed at night until late May.
• Admission: There is a charge to visit the Nyudozaki Lighthouse (please check the latest information for the amount). There is no admission fee for the views themselves at the shores of Lake Tazawa, Cape Nyudo, Dakigaeri Gorge or Hachimantai. Bus fares differ by route, so check the official website of the operator, such as Ugo Kotsu.
• Access: Lake Tazawa = about 10 minutes by bus from JR Tazawako Station to the "Tazawako-han" stop; to Katajiri, where the Statue of Tatsuko stands, it is about another 25 minutes on the Lake Tazawa loop line (services are infrequent, so check in advance). Cape Nyudo = a local bus or the reservation-based shared taxi "Namahage Shuttle" from a station on the JR Oga Line. Dakigaeri Gorge = about 15 minutes by car from JR Kakunodate Station; the on-demand bus "Yobunoru Kakunodate" can also be used. Mount Chokai = about 30 minutes by car from JR Kisakata Station (Hokodate Observatory). The Dragon Eye = about a 20-minute walk from the Hachimantai Summit Rest House.
• Parking: Dakigaeri Gorge has a first and a second parking lot. The Hachimantai Summit Rest House also has a parking lot. Please check the latest information as to whether fees apply.
• Photography rules: The Kagaminuma area of Hachimantai is a special protection zone of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, where collecting plants and animals and altering the terrain are prohibited. Do not stray from the bamboo poles marked with pink tape that guide the route. Flying a drone within the national park requires permission.
• Safety notes: At Dakigaeri Gorge, Semboku City warns that "walking alone is dangerous; always go in groups of two or more" because of frequent bear sightings, and advises striking the metal pipes along the trail to make your presence known. The route to the Dragon Eye is almost entirely over snow, including uphill sections with about 1 m of accumulated snow, so boots or other footwear suitable for walking on snow and a windproof outer layer are essential. Every year people are injured in falls, and it takes roughly one hour for an ambulance to arrive. Parts of the cliffs at Cape Nyudo have no railings, and approaching the edge in strong winds is dangerous.
