Lake Tazawa โ Japan's Deepest Lake with Mystical Cobalt Blue Waters
In the mountains of central Akita Prefecture lies Lake Tazawa (Tazawa-ko), Japan's deepest lake at 423.4 meters โ a depth so great that the lake never freezes in winter and maintains an extraordinary clarity and color throughout the year. The lake's water is a deep, vivid cobalt blue โ a shade that intensifies toward the center and changes with light and weather in ways that have inspired legends of divine spirits dwelling in its depths.
Highlights
The legend of Tatsuko is Tazawa's most beloved story: a beautiful young woman, praying to remain young forever, is transformed into a dragon and enters the lake, becoming its guardian spirit. A gilded bronze statue of Tatsuko, standing at the lake's western shore, is one of Akita's most photographed images โ the golden figure reflected in the dark blue water with snow-capped Mt. Akita-Komagatake rising beyond.
The lake's circumferential road (20 kilometers) can be driven, cycled, or partially walked, offering constantly changing views of the water, surrounding forest, and mountains. Rental bicycles are available at the lakeside. Cruise boats circle the lake in summer, providing close views of the water's extraordinary color from the surface.
The nearby Tazawako Ski Resort and the Nyuto Onsen hot spring cluster make Tazawa a year-round destination โ skiing in winter, onsen and lake activity in other seasons.
Getting There & Tips
Tazawako Station is on the JR Akita Shinkansen (about 2.5 hours from Tokyo). Buses from the station circle the lake and connect to Nyuto Onsen. Rental bicycles at the lakeside bus terminal. The Tatsuko statue is on the western shore โ a short walk from the bus stop.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through autumn for deepest blue color. June and October particularly recommended for clarity and color. The lake's non-freezing nature makes winter visits possible, with snow-covered shores and uninterrupted blue water.
