Minamiboso Loquat, the Juicy Early-Summer Fruit of the Boso Coast

🥜 Chiba|June 30, 2026

Minamiboso Loquat

Blessed with a mild climate, southern Boso has long been known as a noted loquat-growing region. Carefully raised in areas such as Tomiura, the loquats charm with juicy flesh and an elegant sweetness. As a seasonal fruit that can only be tasted during a brief early-summer window, they hold a special place for locals.

Highlights

The highlight is the freshness you can only taste in the growing region, since loquats are delicate and bruise easily. A fully ripened loquat is rich with juice, its sweetness and aroma blooming in a single bite. Beyond the fresh fruit, there is plenty to enjoy in processed goods such as loquat jelly, loquat soft-serve, and baked sweets made with loquat.

Enjoying the Seasons

The loquat season is limited to early summer, with the best eating around May into June. During this time you can also enjoy harvest experiences at sightseeing orchards and savor the just-picked taste. Even after the season, jelly, jam, and other processed goods let you enjoy the loquat flavor year-round.

Access and Basic Information

You can buy fruit or try harvesting at roadside stations, sightseeing orchards, and direct-sale shops in Tomiura and Minamiboso City. By train, use stations on the JR Uchibo Line; by car, roadside stations along the Futtsu-Tateyama Road are convenient. Orchards offering loquat picking prefer advance reservations, so early planning during the season is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Fresh loquats do not keep well, so tasting them on site is best. For souvenirs, choosing long-keeping processed goods such as jelly or baked sweets lets you enjoy Boso loquats at home too.
