Minamiboso Seafood Bowl

Blessed with a mild climate, southern Boso is a region dotted with rich fishing ports, Tateyama and Kamogawa among them. Seafood bowls generously piled with that days local catch are vivid in color and change in character from one bowl to the next. They are a staple treat of a Boso trip, letting you taste a variety of seafood graced by the Kuroshio current all at once.

Highlights

The highlight is the diverse mix of toppings that shifts with the season and the catch. Tuna, horse mackerel, squid, and local white-fleshed fish are arranged in colorful array, each bite offering a different savor. At port-side shops, the appeal is a freshness so direct that the fish you saw at the market lands straight in your bowl.

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring to summer, fatty horse mackerel and bonito take the lead; from autumn to winter, alfonsino and spiny lobster. Pairing a visit with flower fields or a swim lets you enjoy both the nature and the food of southern Boso at once.

Access and Basic Information

You can enjoy it around Tateyama Station on the JR Uchibo Line and Awa-Kamogawa Station on the Sotobo Line, and at diners attached to the various port direct-sale shops. By car, the Futtsu-Tateyama Road and National Route 128 are convenient. Roadside stations and fish centers also have many shops serving seafood bowls.

A Quick Tip

Because the toppings change with weather and fishing conditions, asking the staff for the days recommendation is the right move. If you come across a seasonal local fish, do not hesitate to taste it.
