Wakamiya Shrine Kappa Guardians

Tucked into a small seaside hamlet in Akehama, Seiyo City, Wakamiya Shrine is one of the rarest shrines in all of Japan, for its guardians are not the usual stone lion-dogs but a pair of carved kappa, the legendary river spirits. A heartwarming local tale says that during the warring states era the lord of Takayama Castle, Utsunomiya Masatsuna, caught a mischievous kappa, gently scolded it, and let it go. From the next morning a large sea bream was left at his gate each day in gratitude. The quiet, untouristed grounds keep a humble charm lovingly preserved by local people.
