Autumn Foliage in Fukui

Brilliant crimson, blazing orange, translucent gold — colors erupt across mountain valleys and gorges as if detonating, and you will inevitably find yourself stopping in your tracks, drawing a long, slow breath. "To think a place this beautiful still exists in Japan."

The body that publishes peak-viewing dates is the Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation (fuku-e.com): Lake Kuzuryu late October to mid-November, Kuzuryu Gorge late October to early November, Kameyama Park in Echizen-Ono early to mid-November, and the Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins early to late November. Note that all 43 entries on that page were last updated in 2025 and no 2026 edition has been issued, so treat these as typical-year guidance rather than a forecast. Color begins at the high-altitude Kuzuryu-ko (Lake Kuzuryu) area, then descends toward the castle town of Echizen-Ono and the valley of Ichijodani — autumn moving quietly from the mountains down to the village, just as it always has. Because peak timing varies slightly between each spot, planning your route carefully makes it possible to enjoy a "foliage relay" as you traverse Fukui from one end to the other. Unlike Kyoto or Nikko, where tourists flood in during foliage season, Fukui offers something far rarer: the chance to stand face-to-face with spectacular scenery in complete, undisturbed silence. That is the greatest appeal of Fukui's autumn foliage, known only to those who seek it out.

Now that the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen has made Fukui dramatically more accessible, there has never been a better time to visit this "hidden kingdom of autumn color."

Kuzuryu-ko (Lake Kuzuryu)

The starting point of any Fukui foliage journey — where the raw nature of the Okugoshi highlands reaches its concentrated finest. The emerald-green surface of the lake, born from the construction of the Kuzuryu Dam, mirrors the surrounding mountains' autumn colors with perfect clarity. The view, once witnessed, is impossibly beautiful and never forgotten. On clear mornings, when the wind drops for just a moment, the boundary between water surface and sky dissolves — you may find yourself unable to tell whether you are floating on the lake or standing inside the sky. It feels as though you have wandered into a meticulously painted canvas.

The Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation gives late October to mid-November for Lake Kuzuryu and late October to early November for Kuzuryu Gorge — the earliest of all Fukui's foliage spots to turn. The local way to enjoy Kuzuryu-ko is to stroll slowly along the lakeside promenade, glimpsing the lake surface through tunnels of autumn-colored trees.

Be sure to stop at Yume-no-Kakehashi, the "Bridge of Dreams." Its formal name is Hakogase Bridge, and Ono City states that it is 266 metres long and was built as the prototype for the Great Seto Bridge. It is a suspension bridge, not an arch, and it appears in the city's own tourism guide. From the deck you get a panorama of the lake and its autumn colours. The full closure of National Route 158 at Kamihanbara has been lifted; a temporary road now carries one lane in each direction and is open to large vehicles.

Best time: sunrise to around 9 a.m. Morning mist drifts lightly across the lake surface, and the mystical scene created by autumn foliage and its mirror reflection is a special reward reserved for early risers. Crowds build through the afternoon, so if you want to stand alone with the lake in complete silence, aim for dawn without hesitation.

Access

By train — read this before you plan. Ono City announced on 4 September 2026 that, following the storm damage of 29-30 August 2026, the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line runs a reduced service between Fukui and Miyama, a JR replacement bus covers Miyama to Echizen-Ono, and between Echizen-Ono and Kuzuryu-ko there is no train and no replacement bus at all — only the fourth run of the municipal Izumi-Ono bus, on weekdays. The city says full restoration "is expected to take about one month (as of 1 September 2026)," but no reopening date has been published. If you intend to reach Lake Kuzuryu by rail during the foliage season, contact Ono City's transport division (0779-64-4815) first. JR West's long-term suspension page does not list the Etsumi-Hoku Line.

By car: About 15 minutes from Kuzuryu IC on the Chubu-Jukan Expressway. Be careful about parking: the Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation lists Lake Kuzuryu as having no car park, so do not plan around finding a free lot. Ono City announced on 1 September 2026 that all municipal road closures had been lifted, but National Route 157 remains closed between the Managawa Dam area and Nakajima, with no reopening date announced. Check your route immediately before setting out. Fukui Prefecture's forestry division also reports that many forest roads remain impassable after the storms (as of 3 September 2026), so avoid any route your navigation system sends down one.

Traveler's Tip: This is a high-altitude mountain area, and temperatures can be about 5°C lower than in Fukui city. Bring layerable fleece or a light down jacket. Mobile phone signal can be patchy in the mountain valleys — download an offline map in advance or carry a paper map. Road surfaces may be wet and slippery in morning mist; drive carefully.

Echizen-Ono

The "Little Kyoto of Hokuriku" — the moment you step into this castle town for the first time, you sense the pace of time slowing just slightly. Centered on Kame-yama Hill where Echizen-Ono Castle stands, the former samurai residences and charming historic townscape are enveloped softly by autumn foliage, creating an experience where nostalgia and beauty arrive simultaneously at the chest. A mysterious and deeply moving sensation.

Looking down over the castle town from Kame-yama Park, the whitewalled townscape emerges from a sea of red and yellow trees in a stunning panorama. The Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation gives early to mid-November for Kameyama Park. The ivy clinging to the castle's stone walls turning deep crimson is a sight not to be missed — it is sometimes described as the castle "weeping in autumn."

The town itself also deserves slow exploration on foot. The clear spring water channels (shimizu) that run through the townscape create unique photographic opportunities where autumn leaves float gently on the current.

Access

By train: About 1 hour from JR Fukui Station on the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line to "Echizen-Ono Station" (note: as of September 2026, a JR replacement bus is operating between Miyama and Echizen-Ono following storm damage; check current service status before travelling). From the station, the castle and castle town are about 20 minutes on foot, or accessible by bicycle rental (available at the station).

By car: About 1 hour from Hokuriku Expressway "Fukui IC" via National Route 158.

Traveler's Tip: The weekly market (known as "Nanuka-ichi") has been held in this town for over 400 years, every Wednesday and Sunday morning. Combining a foliage visit with a stroll through this living piece of local history adds another dimension to your trip.

Wakasa Obama Area

The Wakasa region facing the Sea of Japan is where ocean and mountain foliage meet — a combination unique to Fukui. The autumn leaves are naturally gorgeous, but here they are framed by blue water, giving the scenery an additional layer of drama.

The Sotomo Coast — a coastline carved by the waves into dramatic rock formations — is one of Japan's most famous scenic spots. In autumn, yellow and red leaves appear at the clifftops above the dark blue sea, creating a painterly contrast. Access is by sightseeing boat, which provides perspectives impossible from the land.

The approach to Obama Shrine (Wakasa Hikone Shrine), lined with old trees, is also beautiful in autumn. The red torii gates peeping through autumn foliage create a scene of refined Japanese beauty.

Access

By train: About 1 hour 10 minutes from JR Obama Line "Obama Station" from JR Fukui Station. From Obama Station, the Sotomo Coast is about 30 minutes by bus.

By car: About 1 hour 20 minutes from Hokuriku Expressway "Tsuruga IC."

Traveler's Tip: The Sotomo sightseeing boat does not operate in rough weather. Check the operating schedule carefully before heading out.

Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins

A valley where the ruins of an entire castle town of the Sengoku period (Warring States era) lie preserved — Ichijodani is a historically priceless site unlike anywhere else in Japan. At its peak, a city of 10,000 people flourished here; today the stone foundations, garden remains, and earthen embankments sleep silently in the valley. When autumn foliage covers this landscape, a peculiarly moving scene unfolds: the brilliant colors of nature draped over the ruins of a civilization.

The Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation gives early to late November for the Ichijodani ruins. The path through the ruins lined with autumn leaves is a contemplative walk through time. The adjacent Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum houses precious artifacts excavated from the site and is well worth combining with your visit: it opens 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30), and the permanent exhibition costs 700 yen for adults, 400 yen for high school students, 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students and 350 yen for those aged 70 and over. The reconstructed townscape is charged separately at 330 yen for adults, and a combined ticket costs 820 yen for adults aged 18 and over. A free shuttle, the "Karamon-go," runs on weekends and public holidays from 4 April to 29 November 2026.

One safety note: Fukui City has posted that a bear was sighted within the ruins, and it lends bear bells to anyone climbing to the Ichijodani castle site (Ichijodani Asakura Family Ruins Office, 0776-41-2173). Borrow one before heading up the slopes.

Access

By train: About 25 minutes by Keifuku Bus (Route 62, Ichijodani-Togo Line) from Fukui Station West Exit stop 5, or about 16 minutes by the Asakura-Eiheiji Direct Bus from Fukui Station East Exit stop 1; alternatively, take the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line to Ichijodani Station (about 15 minutes from Fukui), then 3 minutes on foot. Alternatively, about 20 minutes by car from Fukui Station.

By car: About 15 minutes from Hokuriku Expressway "Fukui IC."

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Autumn 2026 in Fukui comes with an unusual precondition unlike any other year: the effects of late-August storm and flood damage linger heavily across the transport network. Before deciding where to go, check first whether you can actually get there. Everything below is primary official information (research reference date: 6 September 2026).

Transport Situation to Check First in 2026

Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins (Fukui City)

Note: The museum's information page lists "Closed: every Monday", but the official 2026 calendar shows only 5 October and 9 October as closure dates in October, and only 30 November in November — Mondays on 12, 19, and 26 October, and 2, 9, 16, and 23 November show no closure marking. The museum may well be open nearly every day during the foliage season, but because this contradicts the written guidance, a phone call to confirm is recommended.

Bears: The Fukui City official website has announced "bear sightings have occurred within the ruins site" and states that bear bells are lent out to people climbing towards Ichijodani Castle ruins. If you plan to go up into the mountain area, please borrow one at the office.

Lake Kuzuryu and Kuzuryu-kyo Gorge (Ono City)

Regarding the Kuzuryu Koyo Festival: The relevant Ono City official pages (both the 46th and 47th editions) currently return a 404 error, making it impossible to confirm the 2026 dates or whether the event will be held at all from official sources. This may reflect a response to the late-August storm damage, but no reason has been publicly stated. Do not plan around the festival being held; contact the Tourism and Exchange Division to confirm.

Worth a Detour (Fukui City, Sakai City, Eiheiji Town)

Daihonzan Eiheiji Temple (Eiheiji Town)

*Keifuku Bus Route [88] Eiheiji Line has reduced its weekday services by 6 and weekend/public holiday services by 13 from 1 April 2026. The "Awara-Maruoka-Eiheiji Line" is recommended as an alternative. The "Latest News" page on the Eiheiji official website has not been updated since 2017; the reception hours listed there (e.g., 8:00–17:30 for May–October) contradict the admission information page which states 8:30–16:30. Maruoka Castle (Sakai City) — In 2026, the Foliage Peak Coincides with the Tower Being Closed

According to a Sakai City Board of Education announcement (updated 28 August 2026), the tower interior cannot be entered from 9 November 2026 to 30 November 2026 (scheduled) due to restoration works. The period during which the third floor of the tower cannot be visited is 26–30 October. The Prefectural Tourism Federation's peak colour for Maruoka Castle is mid-November — this falls entirely within the closure period. The restricted access period runs from 1 August 2026 to November 2027 (scheduled). Both the Maruoka Castle car park (40 standard spaces) and the Ippitsu Keijo Nihon-ichi Mijikai Tegami-no-Yakata North Car Park (140 standard spaces / 4 coaches) are free, open 6:30–20:00. The Maruoka Castle official website's page title reads "Admission is currently not possible due to tower restoration works", which conflicts with Sakai City's stated dates — advance confirmation with Maruoka Castle Management Office 0776-66-0303 is essential.

Yokokan Garden (a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty) (Fukui City) — 2026 Autumn Illuminations Confirmed

The Fukui City official website (updated 25 August 2026) has announced autumn illuminations on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 1 November 2026 (Sun) to 29 November 2026 (Sun), 17:00–20:30 (last admission 20:00), admission ¥220. Standard opening hours: 9:00–19:00 from 1 March to 5 November; 9:00–17:00 from 6 November to the end of February (last admission 30 minutes before closing). 3 November (Culture Day) is a free admission day. Car parks are free (East gate: 10 spaces / West gate: 10 spaces + 3 large coaches; coaches must book in advance). Prefectural Tourism Federation peak colour: mid to late November. Cultural Promotion Division 0776-20-5367 (weekdays) / Regional History Museum 0776-21-0489 (weekends and public holidays).

Nishiyama Park (Sabae City)

The Sabae City official website carries a "Momiji MAP (peak season: mid-November to early December)" and the park contains approximately 1,600 maple trees. Nishiyama Park Management Office 0778-51-1001 / Sabae Tourism Association 0778-52-2323 (9:00–17:00). *The city's park information page was last updated in 2017 and contains no information on opening hours, admission, or car parks.*

Places That Cannot Be Reached or Written About

Karikomike Pond (Ono City) cannot be reached in autumn 2026 either. Fukui Prefecture Okuetsu Civil Engineering Office (updated 17 August 2026) states that the full closure of Prefectural Road Kamiko-ike-Katsuhara Line continues for the entire stretch upstream of Hatogayu, with road disaster restoration works ongoing and the notice reading: "The road continues to be impassable." The Zengoro-bashi bridge is under replacement construction, with the notice: "The temporary bridge is a construction road; general vehicles cannot pass." Koike Park is also closed. No alternative arrangement such as private vehicle restrictions plus a shuttle bus has been announced on any official website. No estimated restoration or reopening date has been given (Okuetsu Civil Engineering Office 0779-66-1221).

The Fukui Prefecture Tourism Federation's Karikomike Pond page still carries a caution note reading "(updated 30 August 2024) The pond cannot be accessed via Prefectural Route 173 this autumn foliage season", but "this autumn" refers to autumn 2024, not 2026. Please check the current situation on the Fukui Prefecture Okuetsu Civil Engineering Office page.

The current status of car parking at Tojinbo (Sakai City) could not be confirmed from official sources. Sakai City announced "the municipal car park has been closed since 1 July 2023", but that tourism page still shows an update date of 10 June 2024. Meanwhile, a redevelopment project page (updated 16 June 2026) states "Tojinbo Car Park site preparation works: April 2024 – March 2026", and yet the closure notice remains in place even though the scheduled completion date has passed. Do not assume free parking is available; contact Sakai City Tourism and Exchange Division 0776-50-3152. The pleasure boat fare also differs between Sakai City (adults ¥1,800) and the Prefectural Tourism Federation (adults ¥2,000), so contacting the boat operator directly (0776-81-3808) is the only reliable approach.

*As a new addition: Sakai City has announced a trial bus service between Komatsu Airport and Tojinbo (updated 3 September 2026). It runs on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and year-end/New Year period from 3 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 (54 days in total): one-way adult ¥1,000 / child ¥500; cash only; 33 seats per service on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Keikan Kotsu 0776-78-6234.*

Preparing for Bears

According to Fukui Prefecture's Natural Environment Division, a poor acorn harvest in autumn to winter of 2025 led to a sharp rise in bear sightings, with two incidents resulting in human injuries in November in Ono City and Katsuyama City. However, that page's last update was 15 October 2025, and no bear sighting forecast or advisory for autumn 2026 has yet been issued. There is currently no basis for judging whether this year will see more or fewer bears than usual — please take the same standard precautions as always (bear bell; avoid entering the mountains alone or in the early morning or evening; make noise as you walk). Natural Environment Division 0776-20-0305 / Ono City distributes bear sighting information in the urban area via disaster prevention email and LINE.
