01 | Hakata Station — Chikushigashisho Josuian's Signature Confection "Chikushi Mochi"

The signature confection of "Chikushigashisho Josuian," a leading Japanese confectionery shop representing Hakata, is Chikushi Mochi. Near Hakata Station alone, there are multiple directly-operated stores: the Hakata Station-mae Main Store, Myuing Store 1 and Store 2, and the Hakata Station Deitos Store. Shooting slightly from above at a slight angle captures the Japanese artistry of the display case and gift box beautifully. Morning, when natural light streams in, is ideal. Since it's also a popular souvenir, be sure to also capture an "unboxing video" of the moment the box is opened.

Access: The Hakata Station Deitos Store (Chikushi-guchi side) is open 8:00–21:00; the Hakata Station-mae Main Store (2-19-29 Hakata-ekimae) is open weekdays 9:00–19:00, weekends and holidays 9:30–18:00.

02 | Tenjin — The Long-Established Japanese Confectionery "Suzukake" in the Basement of Iwataya Main Building

"Suzukake," a Fukuoka Japanese confectionery shop located on the basement second floor of Iwataya Main Building in Tenjin. The display of seasonal fresh sweets arranged neatly in rows is a picture in itself. Shooting up close and straight-on through the glass case makes the colors and craftsmanship of the sweets really stand out. Placing one piece on a white dish at home and shooting from directly above is also recommended. There is also a branch on the basement second floor of Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin.

03 | Itoshima — Oyster Huts and Spectacular Soft-Serve Eaten Against the Sea

Along the Itoshima coastline, oyster huts open for business from autumn through spring. According to the Itoshima City Tourism Association, the Itoshima oyster hut season runs from around October through April the following year. The classic Itoshima Instagram shot is charcoal-grilled oysters paired with a backdrop of vivid blue sky and sea. The trick is to hold the soft serve and shoot in portrait orientation from a slightly lower angle so the sea fills the background. The golden hour (around 4–5 p.m.) yields softer light and makes for an even more dramatic shot.

04 | Hakata Station — Fruit Parfaits at "Campbell Early" on the 9th Floor of Amu Plaza Hakata

"Campbell Early" is a shop specializing in parfaits and pancakes with seasonal fruit as the star. The layered fruit and cream are the photogenic highlight — shoot the glass straight from the side to capture the beautiful stacking of colors in the cross-section. The white plates and bright interior make for a clean, simple background. Directly connected to Hakata Station, it's perfect for one final shot at the end of your trip.

05 | Nakasu-Kawabata — "Hakata Riverain Mall by TAKASHIMAYA" and a Stroll Along the Naka River

"Hakata Riverain Mall by TAKASHIMAYA," a multi-purpose complex standing along the Naka River. Buy a sweet treat, head out to the riverside promenade, and you can capture beautiful photos using the reflections on the water's surface. Spring cherry blossom season and lit-up evening hours in particular take photos up a notch. Directly connected to Subway Nakasu-Kawabata Station, it's also a handy refuge on rainy days.

Access: 1 minute on foot from Subway Nakasu-Kawabata Station

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening hours / closing days: For Josuian, the Hakata Station Deitos branch is open 8:00-21:00; the main store in front of Hakata Station 9:00-19:00 on weekdays and 9:30-18:00 on weekends and public holidays; and the Hakata Station Ming branches No. 1 and No. 2 9:00-21:00. Suzukake's Fukuoka Tenjin Iwataya branch is on the second basement floor of the Iwataya main building (following the department store's opening hours). Campbell Early is in "Kuten" on the 9th floor of Amu Plaza Hakata, open 11:00-22:00 (last order 21:30). The oyster huts of Itoshima operate seasonally from around October to the following April, with days and hours differing from hut to hut.
• Budget and price guide: Japanese sweets sold as gifts mostly come in boxes. At the oyster huts the pricing structure (oysters sold by weight, seating charges, whether you may bring your own food and drink) differs from hut to hut, so check the information provided by each one.
• Access: Josuian Deitos branch = the Chikushi exit side of JR Hakata Station. Suzukake = 2-5-35 Tenjin, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City, second basement floor of the Iwataya main building (there is also a branch on the second basement floor of Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin). The Itoshima oyster huts = bus or taxi from JR Chikuzen-Maebaru Station. Hakata Riverain Mall by TAKASHIMAYA = directly connected to Nakasu-Kawabata subway station.
• Parking: The commercial complexes at Hakata Station and Tenjin have paid parking, but they tend to fill up on holidays. Getting around Itoshima essentially requires a car, and on weekends during the oyster hut season there can be queues for parking, so set out early.
• Photography rules: Photography of sales floors and display cases in department stores and station buildings generally requires permission. Have a word with a member of staff, and take care not to capture other customers in your shots. Oyster huts are working spaces with charcoal fires, so do not set up a tripod in the aisles and do not linger for long periods near the fire.
• Points to note: Trendy business formats such as crepe and cheese tart shops are prone to closing or relocating, and some have in fact withdrawn from the Hakata area. Always check the official website before your visit to confirm that the shop is still there.
