Mojiko Retro โ€” A Port Town Rich in Meiji and Taisho Romantic Architecture

At the northernmost tip of Kyushu, where the Kanmon Strait separates Japan's main islands, lies Mojiko โ€” a port town that time forgot in the most charming possible way. Its streets are lined with brick warehouses, domed banks, and colonial-style customs houses from the Meiji and Taisho eras, earning it the nickname "Mojiko Retro" and status as one of Japan's most atmospheric historic districts.

Highlights

The waterfront promenade anchors the Retro district, where major landmarks stand within easy walking distance. The Old Moji Customs House (1912) and the Old Osaka Shosen building showcase Western-influenced architecture that was once the face of Japan's booming maritime trade. The Moji Port Hotel, a converted Renaissance-style structure, dominates the skyline. Inside the renovated brick warehouses, quirky shops and cafรฉs sell local specialties like yaki-curry โ€” a Mojiko invention where curry is baked with cheese on top. A free ferry whisks visitors to Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture in just five minutes, making it easy to experience two prefectures in one day. The Kanmon Bridge glows spectacularly at night.

Getting There & Tips

Mojiko Station is served by JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kokura (about 30 minutes). From Fukuoka, the journey takes roughly an hour via Kokura. The Retro district is entirely walkable from the station. Pick up a free map at the tourist information center near the station. Yaki-curry lunch is a must โ€” several competing restaurants cluster near the waterfront. Budget 3โ€“4 hours to explore comfortably.

Best Time to Visit

Mojiko shines in spring when wisteria blooms and in autumn for mild temperatures. The Kanmon Strait Festival in August is lively. Winter evenings bring Christmas illuminations along the waterfront, turning the historic district into a romantic twilight scene.
