Here are five of the most photogenic spots that even locals never tire of.

01 | Uminonakamichi — The Sandbar Leading to Shikano Island (Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City)

Uminonakamichi is a narrow sandbar stretching from Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, out to Shikano Island. This spectacular road overlooking the Genkai Sea on one side and Hakata Bay on the other is truly a "road floating on the sea." At dusk, the sky and ocean blue turn to orange and pink, spreading a breathtaking gradient.

• Best time: 30 minutes before sunset to just after sunset (especially autumn to winter)
• Shooting angle: From Uminonakamichi Seaside Park or the seaside walking path, aim for the horizon from a low angle. Never shoot from the road surface or the center of the road, or stop your vehicle there — it is extremely dangerous and absolutely must be avoided.
• Access: Get off at JR Kashii Line "Uminonakamichi Station." Uminonakamichi Seaside Park (paid admission) and the seaside promenade are within walking distance.

02 | A Panoramic View of Fukuoka City from "ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA"

"Aburayama Shimin no Mori" was integrated with the adjacent "Aburayama Farm" and renovated in 2023, and is now known as "ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA." Located about 30 minutes by car from the city center, it offers a beautiful contrast where lush green mountains overlap with the Fukuoka cityscape. Please note that the parking lot is open only from 9:00–18:00, and nighttime photography of the city lights from inside the park is not possible.

• Best time: Late afternoon before closing (18:00). In autumn to winter when days are shorter, you may also catch the evening view before closing. The Nature Study Center is open 9:00–16:30.
• Shooting angle: Use a wide-angle lens to capture the city and sky on a grand scale. Closed on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month (if that day is a public holiday, closed the following Wednesday), so plan accordingly.
• Access: About 30 minutes by car from central Fukuoka. Parking fee is ¥300 for up to 3 hours for regular vehicles, then ¥100 per hour (¥2,000 for large vehicles). Bus service is limited, so check the official website for the latest access information.

03 | A Mountain-Top Panorama — Mount Sangun (Chikushino City, Umi Town, Iizuka City)

At 935.9 meters, the highest peak of the Sangun mountain range, straddling the borders of Chikushino City, Umi Town, and Iizuka City. Its sweeping view takes in Fukuoka City and Itoshima City, all the way to the Genkai Sea to the west, and nearly the entire Chikuho area to the east. On mornings with large temperature differences, a sea of clouds may spread out below.

• Best time: Early morning from October to December (just after sunrise), on days with large temperature differences
• Shooting angle: Frame the moment the sun emerges from the sea of clouds in portrait orientation from the summit. Silhouette compositions are also magical and recommended.
• Access: From trailheads on the Umi Town and Sasaguri Town sides, it is about a 2-hour hike to the summit — a genuine mountain climb. A headlamp is essential if you start before dawn. Carry warm clothing, rain gear, a map, and sufficient water. Avoid going in light clothing.

04 | A Spectacular Blue — Keya no Oto (Itoshima)

Located at the tip of the Itoshima Peninsula, with hexagonal and octagonal columnar basalt joints designated as a national natural monument. It is Japan's largest basalt cave, measuring 64 meters high, 90 meters deep, and 10 meters wide, and the scenery created by the streaming light and cobalt-blue sea is nothing short of stunning. Taking a sightseeing boat (about 25 minutes) gets you right up close to the cave.

• Best time: Sunny mornings. However, boat tours typically run from April through November, with a suspension from December through March. Even on sunny days, the boats may be cancelled if winds are strong (about one-third of days are cancelled), so be sure to check operating conditions in advance.
• Shooting angle: From the boat, use the cave entrance as a frame in a "framing composition" to cut out the blue sea within
• Access: About 30 minutes by bus from JR Chikuhi Line "Chikuzen-Maebaru Station." Sightseeing boat fee is ¥1,000 for adults (middle school age and up), ¥500 for children (ages 3 to elementary school).

05 | Orono Island — An Offshore Island Floating in the Genkai Sea

Orono Island (Orono-shima), a remote island in Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City, in the middle of the Genkai Sea. • Best time: A calm, sunny day. A day trip is nearly impossible unless you go on a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday when the ferry runs twice a day (Monday, Wednesday, Friday have only one departure per day).
• Shooting angle: Use cherry blossom petals as a soft blur in the foreground and the sea in the background in a "foreground blur composition" for a dreamy effect.
• Access: About 65 minutes from the Meinohama passenger terminal of the Fukuoka City municipal ferry service. One-way fare is ¥1,790 for adults and ¥900 for children. With limited sailings and possible cancellations, always check the timetable and weather before heading out.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: For sunset views at Uminonakamichi, from 30 minutes before sunset to just after it. For Keya no Oto, the morning of a clear day when the light reaches into the cave. For the views from Mount Sangun, early morning in autumn or winter when the temperature range is large.
• Opening hours / season: At ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA (formerly the Aburayama Citizens' Forest and Aburayama Ranch), the parking lots may be used from 9:00 to 18:00 and the nature observation centre is open 9:00-16:30. It is closed on the first and third Wednesday of each month (the following Wednesday when that day is a holiday). The Keya no Oto sightseeing boat usually operates from April to November and does not run from December to March.
• Fees: The Keya no Oto sightseeing boat costs 1,000 yen for adults (junior high school age and above) and 500 yen for children (age 3 through elementary school), and takes about 25 minutes. The Fukuoka City ferry (Meinohama to Orono-shima) costs 1,790 yen for adults and 900 yen for children one way.
• Access: Uminonakamichi = get off at Uminonakamichi Station on the JR Kashii Line. ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA = about 30 minutes by car from central Fukuoka City. Keya no Oto = about 30 minutes by bus from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station on the JR Chikuhi Line. Orono-shima = about 65 minutes from the Meinohama passenger terminal of the Fukuoka City ferry. There is 1 sailing a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 2 a day on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
• Parking: Parking at ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA costs 300 yen for up to 3 hours for ordinary, semi-medium and medium-sized vehicles, plus 100 yen for each additional hour, and 2,000 yen for large vehicles (the entrance parking lot is free of charge except in peak periods).
• Photography rules: Never take photographs or stop and park on the roadway. The columnar jointing at Keya no Oto is a Natural Monument of Japan, and collecting or damaging the rock is prohibited. Drones are subject not only to the Civil Aeronautics Act but also to the rules of each facility and municipality, so do not fly them without the administrator's permission.
• Safety notes: The Keya no Oto sightseeing boat is cancelled on windy days even when the weather is fine, and it is cancelled on roughly a third of the days in a month. Mount Sangun, at an elevation of 935.9 m, is a serious climb, taking about 2 hours one way to the summit. If you climb before dawn, be sure to carry a headlamp as well as warm clothing, rain gear, a map and plenty of water. Orono-shima has few ferry sailings, and if they are cancelled you may be unable to get back.
