๐Ÿœ Fukuoka|June 22, 2026

Tanabata Jinja (Himekoso Jinja)

In the city of Ogori in Fukuoka stands Himekoso Jinja, affectionately called the Star Festival Shrine by locals, a rare old shrine tied to the tradition of Tanabata. Its deities are the weaver goddess Orihime and the goddess Himekoso. It appears in an eighth century gazetteer and has been worshiped as the local guardian deity for some 1300 years.

This area long thrived on weaving, and devotion to the weaving goddess merged with the star festival tale brought from China, so it came to be cherished as the Star Festival Shrine. In old times it was said to improve skill in sewing and weaving and to bring good matches, and today it has been chosen as a lovers sanctuary.

The true highlight is the star festival season in July, when colorful paper strips and decorations adorn the precinct and a special liveliness fills the air. Since the grounds are usually quiet, those who wish to avoid crowds may also enjoy a relaxed visit outside the festival period.
