Welling up in Chikushino near Dazaifu, Futsukaichi Onsen was long called the Suita bath and boasts thirteen centuries of history, even appearing in the Manyoshu. Also known as the inner parlor of Hakata, it is a calm hot spring town where venerable inns and public bathhouses stand within an easy walk. In the Edo period it was also known as a spa favored by the Kuroda domain.

Highlights

  • Ancient history preserved in the Manyoshu, and a dignified bath town once favored by the Kuroda domain
  • A radioactive spring containing radium, marked by a soft and gentle bathing feel
  • Easy-to-visit public bathhouses such as Hakatayu and Gozenyu dotted about the town
  • A location easy to combine with historical strolls such as Dazaifu Tenmangu and Mount Tenpai

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring offers plum and cherry blossoms around Dazaifu, summer brings a cool retreat feel to the quiet town, and autumn invites you to enjoy the foliage of Mount Tenpai. In winter, walking the still streets with a warmed body deepens the lingering atmosphere of the old capital.

Access and Basic Information

  • Location: Yumachi, Chikushino City, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Access: about 14 minutes by limited express from JR Hakata Station to JR Futsukaichi Station, then about 5 minutes by taxi, or a few minutes by taxi from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station. From the Tenjin bus center it is about 30 minutes by highway bus to the Chikushino stop, then a few minutes on foot
  • Spring quality: radioactive spring (alkaline simple type) with a soft, gentle feel
  • Sample public baths: the free-flowing Hakatayu is 350 yen for adults (450 yen on weekends and holidays), open 10:00 to 21:30 (reception until 21:00). The municipal Gozenyu is 250 yen for adults, open 9:00 to 21:00, with closing days such as the third Wednesday. Both are inexpensive and easy to drop into

Practical Travel Notes

  • Best season and time: the early spring when the plums of Dazaifu bloom, and the autumn foliage of Mount Tenpai, are especially popular. Public baths grow busier with locals in the evening, so a daytime visit is more relaxed
  • Avoiding crowds: public baths also fill up on weekends and at the peak of Dazaifu sightseeing, so weekdays or mornings are recommended
  • Time needed: about an hour for a public bath, or half a day to a full day combined with Dazaifu sightseeing
  • Nearby real spots: Dazaifu Tenmangu, the Kyushu National Museum, Mount Tenpai, and Komyozenji temple. The grilled umegae-mochi along the approach is a local specialty
  • Budget sense: a public-bath soak is an affordable few hundred yen. Even with Dazaifu sightseeing and a meal, a few thousand yen per person is plenty

A Quick Tip

It is close to both Hakata and Dazaifu and easy to reach by train, so a single affordable soak on the way home from sightseeing is a fine plan. Some public baths do not lend towels, so bringing your own is wise.
