Futsukaichi Onsen

Welling up in Chikushino near Dazaifu, Futsukaichi Onsen was long called the Suita bath and boasts thirteen centuries of history, even appearing in the Manyoshu. Also known as the inner parlor of Hakata, it is a calm hot spring town where venerable inns and public bathhouses stand within an easy walk.

Highlights

- Ancient history preserved in the Manyoshu, including a poem said to have been composed by the noble Otomo no Tabito mourning his late wife - A radioactive spring containing radium, marked by a soft and gentle bathing feel - A location easy to combine with historical strolls such as Dazaifu Tenmangu and Mount Tenpai

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring offers plum and cherry blossoms around Dazaifu, summer brings a cool retreat feel to the quiet town, and autumn invites you to enjoy the foliage of Mount Tenpai. In winter, walking the still streets with a warmed body deepens the lingering atmosphere of the old capital.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Yumachi, Chikushino City, Fukuoka Prefecture - Access: about 14 minutes by limited express from JR Hakata Station to JR Futsukaichi Station, then a few minutes by taxi, or from Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station - Spring quality: radioactive spring (alkaline simple radium spring)

A Quick Tip

It is close to both Hakata and Dazaifu and easy to reach by train, so a single soak on the way home from sightseeing is a fine plan.
