5 Stunning Photo Spots in Gifu

Gifu Prefecture is a treasure trove of photogenic scenery — from the majestic peaks of the Japan Alps to mystical gorges and ravines. This article covers Kamikochi (in Nagano Prefecture), Shirakawa-go, Magome-juku, Enakyo Gorge and Yoro no Taki Waterfall.

① Kamikochi (Nagano Prefecture) — A Mystical World Accessible from the Gifu Side

Kamikochi, where the clear stream of the Azusa River and the Hotaka mountain range spread out like a single painting, is often called the most Instagram-worthy spot in all of Japan. At Taisho-ike Pond, withered trees and the mountains reflected upside-down on the water's surface create a fantastical world.

• Best time and season: Before 6 a.m., when mist drifts in autumn (October) or during the fresh foliage of May
• Shooting angle: Lower your camera as close to the water as possible and aim for the inverted Hotaka reflection
• Access: The location is in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, but entering from the Gifu/Okuhida side is the standard route. Take a Nohi Bus from Takayama Station toward Hirayu Onsen and transfer to the Kamikochi-bound bus at Hirayu Bus Terminal. Private cars must change to a shuttle bus at Akandana Parking (year-round private car restrictions apply). From the Nagano side, it is about 1 hour 15 minutes by bus from Matsumoto Station.

② Shirakawa-go — A Spectacular Combination of Gassho Farmhouses and Snowy Scenery

In winter, when snow settles over the World Heritage gassho-zukuri (thatched farmhouse) village of Shirakawa-go, it looks as if you have wandered into the world of a Studio Ghibli film. The overhead shot from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck is guaranteed to become a keeper!

• Best time and season: During the light-up period in January to February, from dusk through nighttime
• Shooting angle: Capture the entire village with a wide-angle lens from the observation deck. Smoke rising from the chimneys adds character.

③ Magome-juku — A Time-Slip Lane of Cobblestones and Old Houses

Magome-juku, a post town on the Nakasendo, is a picturesque streetscape of cobblestone slopes and lattice-windowed old merchant houses. You can enjoy Instagram-worthy scenery in every season — autumn foliage, winter snow, and more.

• Best time and season: 7 to 9 a.m. (few tourists, soft light), November for autumn foliage
• Shooting angle: Frame from the bottom of the slope looking up to convey depth
• Access: About 25 minutes on the Kitaena Kotsu bus (Magome line) from JR Nakatsugawa Station to the Magome terminus

④ Enakyo Gorge — A Spectacular Cruise Past Strange Rocks on a Dam Lake

Enakyo Gorge, formed by the Oi Dam on the Kiso River, impresses with its uniquely shaped strange rocks and deep blue-green lake surface. Shooting from the sightseeing boat gives you powerful shots impossible to capture from land.

• Best time and season: During the foliage peak (early November) in the afternoon, when light hits the rock faces
• Shooting angle: Aiming straight ahead from the bow of the boat allows you to capture both the strange rocks and the lake surface beautifully
• Access: About 15 minutes by Tohtetsu bus from JR Ena Station to the Enakyo stop (about 10 minutes by car from the station to the boat pier)

⑤ Yoro no Taki Waterfall — A Silver-White Waterfall Shining at the End of a Green Tunnel

Yoro no Taki, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, is beautiful for the contrast of white water cascading in a mystical space wrapped in deep greenery. You can get both an abundance of negative ions and a great Instagram shot at the same time.

• Best time and season: May to June for fresh foliage, or October to November during the autumn foliage season, in the morning
• Shooting angle: Capture the full waterfall in a vertical composition. Using a slow shutter (1/10 second or slower) to render the flowing water silky smooth is recommended.
• Access: About 10 minutes on foot from Yoro Station (Yoro Railway) to the entrance of Yoro Park, then a 30-40 minute uphill walk to the falls (about 5 minutes on foot if you drive up to the paid "Yoro Falls car park")

Practical Information for Your Visit

Kamikochi

• Location: Kamikochi is in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture (the Ministry of the Environment's Kamikochi Ranger Office is also in Azumi, Matsumoto City). Even if you approach from the Gifu side, the site itself lies within Nagano Prefecture.
• Private-car restrictions: Private cars are banned year-round. Visitors transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi at the Sawando car parks (Nagano side) or Hirayu (Gifu side). Nagano Prefecture publishes the details.

Shirakawa-go

• Getting to the viewpoint (important): The car park at the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory has been closed indefinitely since 28 December 2023, and it is not possible to reach the observatory by car or coach. Access is limited to the shuttle bus or walking.
• Shuttle bus: 300 yen for adults (junior high school age and above) and 150 yen for children and visitors with disabilities. The stop is beside the Wada House, and the last uphill service is at 15:40.
• Access: There is no railway station nearby, so visitors come by car or highway bus. About 1 hour 10 minutes by car from the Kanazawa direction and about 2 hours 15 minutes from the Nagoya direction; about 1 hour 20 minutes by highway bus from Kanazawa Station and about 2 hours 30 minutes from Meitetsu Bus Center.

Magome-juku

• Vehicle restrictions: The stretch between the upper and lower entrances is closed to vehicles from 10:00 to 16:00 for pedestrian safety (except for certain permitted vehicles). Nakatsugawa City also asks drivers to refrain from using the road outside those hours except in emergencies, in order to protect the stone paving.
• Access: About 10 minutes by car from Nakatsugawa IC on the Chuo Expressway, or about 3 minutes from Misaka Smart IC. From lane 3 in front of JR Nakatsugawa Station, the Kitaena Kotsu bus (Magome line) takes about 25 minutes to the Magome terminus and costs 800 yen one way for adults.

Enakyo Gorge

• Parking: About 100 spaces at Enakyo Sazanami Hiroba (Sazanami Park), and 70 spaces at the sightseeing-boat pier (66 for ordinary cars and 4 for coaches).
• Access: About 10 minutes by car from JR Ena Station, or about 15 minutes by Tohtetsu bus to the Enakyo stop. About 25 minutes from Ena IC on the Chuo Expressway (about 10 minutes to the boat pier).
• Illumination: During the cherry-blossom season the gorge is lit from sunset until 22:00.
• Sightseeing boat: 9:00-16:00 from 1 April to 30 November and 10:00-15:00 from 1 December to 31 March. It is closed on Tuesdays from 1 December to 15 March (it does operate on Tuesday 3 January). Fares are 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for children; the operator, Tohsyoh Co., publishes these as the fares up to 30 September 2026. Sailings are cancelled in strong wind, dense fog or high water.

Yoro no Taki (Yoro Park)

• Hours: 9:00-17:00
• Closed: Tuesdays (the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday) and 29 December to 3 January. The park may also close at short notice in bad weather.
• Parking: The park-managed car parks are free (open 9:00-17:15, last entry 16:15). The privately run "Yoro Falls car park" is charged. From the free "Yoro Falls entrance car park" it is a 30-40 minute walk to the falls; from the paid car park it is about 5 minutes. The park recommends public transport during long holidays, when the roads and car parks become very congested.
