Fujido Cave

Located in the mountains of Ueno Village in Gunma, Fujido is one of the largest limestone caves in the Kanto region, stretching roughly 2.2 kilometers in total length. The tour route covers about 600 meters, letting you walk through cool underground passages and admire formations shaped by nature over countless years. Local legend says villagers discovered a small opening here about 1,200 years ago, and a monk later used the cave for spiritual training, which is why it has long been cherished as a place of purification.

Highlights

- A mysterious underground space lined with stalactites and stalagmites grown over ages - Cave interiors dramatically lit by light and sound effects - Many points of interest within the cave named after Buddhist themes - A sense of adventure from the long spiral staircase leading to the entrance

Enjoying the Seasons

The temperature inside stays around 10 degrees Celsius all year, so it feels refreshingly cool in summer and gently warm in winter. It is perfect both as a summer retreat from the heat and as a quiet walk in the colder months. The surrounding mountains are also beautiful with fresh greenery and autumn foliage, showing a different face each season.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Ueno Village, Tano District, Gunma Prefecture - About one hour by car from the Shimonita Interchange on the Joshin-etsu Expressway - Reception hours vary by season, so checking in advance is recommended - The cave has many stairs and damp footing, so wear comfortable shoes

A Quick Tip

Parts of the cave are dim and slippery, so shoes with good grip will help you feel secure. Since the underground is chilly, bringing an extra layer even in summer will keep you comfortable.
