Itsukushima Shrine and Miyajima: Aki's Miyajima Where World Heritage Floating Torii Shines

Miyajima (Itsukushima) in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima is an island rich in nature with Mt. Misen (elevation 535m), where Itsukushima Shrine was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Access and Practical Information

About 10 minutes by ferry from JR Miyajima-guchi Station and Miyajima-guchi Pier. From central Hiroshima, you can transfer between tram and ferry. The ferry fare is 200 yen one way for adults (revised October 2023), and separately, a "Miyajima Visitor Tax" of 100 yen per person applies when crossing to Miyajima (with exemptions for preschool children and others). Admission to enter Itsukushima Shrine is around 300 yen for adults (subject to change by season, so confirm via official information). The Mt. Misen ropeway charges a fare, and the one-way ride takes about 15 minutes.

A day trip is plenty enjoyable, but staying one night on Miyajima lets you savor the quiet shrine in the morning and evening away from daytime crowds, and the illuminated great torii at leisure. Allow about half a day for the shrine and shopping street, or a full day adding the Mt. Misen climb. Because the great torii's appearance changes greatly with the tide, checking the tide table is essential. Do not forget comfortable shoes and care not to bring food or paper near the deer.
