Itsukushima Shrine and Miyajima: Aki's Miyajima Where World Heritage Floating Torii Shines

Miyajima (Itsukushima) in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima is an island rich in nature with Mt. Misen (elevation 535m), where Itsukushima Shrine was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The symbol of Itsukushima Shrine is the great torii gate, about 16.6 meters tall, standing on the sea. The vermilion great torii, whose main pillars use natural camphor wood, appears to float on the sea at high tide, while at low tide you can walk across the sand to approach it closely. The "Reiwa major restoration," which continued from 2019, was completed at the end of 2022, and its beautifully restored form can be seen once again.

Itsukushima Shrine is an old shrine that has drawn faith since ancient times, and the current shrine buildings were developed by Taira no Kiyomori in the late Heian period. The buildings, constructed on the sea, show different expressions with the tides, and the National Treasure buildings including the main hall, worship hall, and corridor form a magnificent landscape. Miyajima's highest peak, Mt. Misen, can be summited by combining ropeway and hiking, and the multi-island beauty of the Seto Inland Sea from the summit is overwhelming. Because the great torii changes its expression in morning sun, evening sun, and moonlight, checking the tide table in advance and aiming for hours when you can experience both high and low tide is recommended.

Access and Practical Information

About 10 minutes by ferry from JR Miyajima-guchi Station and Miyajima-guchi Pier. From central Hiroshima, you can transfer between tram and ferry. The ferry fare is 200 yen one way for adults (revised October 2023), and separately, a "Miyajima Visitor Tax" of 100 yen per person applies when crossing to Miyajima (with exemptions for preschool children and others). Admission to enter Itsukushima Shrine is 300 yen for adults, 200 yen for senior high school students and 100 yen for junior high and elementary school students. The Treasure Hall costs the same, and a combined discount ticket sold only at the shrine entrance covers both for 500 yen, 300 yen and 150 yen respectively. Entry to Toyokuni Shrine (Senjokaku) is 100 yen for adults and 50 yen for junior high and elementary school students. The Mt. Misen ropeway charges a fare, and the one-way ride takes about 15 minutes.

Practical Travel Notes

A day trip is plenty enjoyable, but staying one night on Miyajima lets you savor the quiet shrine in the morning and evening away from daytime crowds, and the illuminated great torii at leisure. Allow about half a day for the shrine and shopping street, or a full day adding the Mt. Misen climb. Because the great torii's appearance changes greatly with the tide, checking the tide table is essential. Do not forget comfortable shoes and care not to bring food or paper near the deer. Budgets center on transport, the visitor tax, shrine admission, the ropeway fare, and dining costs.

A Word of Advice

First check the tide table, and by including both the great torii floating on the sea at high tide and the one you can walk up to at low tide in your plan, you can enjoy two expressions in a single visit.
