Yuki Onsen Kokumin Shukusha Yuki Lodge: Day-Use Hot Spring

About an hour by car from central Hiroshima, this hot spring inn sits in a quiet backcountry where the murmur of the clear Uchikogawa river resounds. Yuki Onsen is known as a celebrated spring with a history stretching back over a thousand years. Day-use bathing is available, so you can easily enjoy the free-flowing spring water.

Access and Basic Information

The lodge is in Yuki-cho, Saeki Ward, Hiroshima City, about an hour by car from the city center. From the south exit of JR Itsukaichi Station it is about 75 minutes by Hiroden bus. Day-use bathing follows a seasonal two-part schedule: roughly 10:00 to 21:00 in the summer season (around June to September) and 10:00 to 20:00 in the winter season (around October to May). Admission is about 750 yen for adults (a one-day pass is around a thousand yen) and about 300 yen for children. The spring is a free-flowing simple weak-radioactive hot spring. Parking is available. Reception hours and fees may differ by season, so check the official information before visiting.

Practical Travel Notes

To savor the free-flowing spring water and the sound of the river, a slow soak in the streamside open-air bath is recommended, with a stay of one to two hours for a bath and a rest. The budget for day-use bathing is around a thousand yen. You can also combine it with nearby Yunoyama Onsen for a little hot-spring hopping, and pairing it with a walk through Yuki satoyama hills or riverside play lets you take in the nature. As it is a distance from the city center, a car is convenient, but if using the bus, services are limited, so checking the timetable is advised. The autumn foliage season is an especially popular time.

• The baths: A cypress bath (one open-air bath, one indoor bath and one high-temperature dry sauna) and a marble bath (one open-air bath, one indoor bath and one mist sauna). On even-numbered days the cypress bath is for men and the marble bath for women, and on odd-numbered days it is the other way round

This is for the room only and does not include the bathing fee, and advance reservations are required

• Meals: The dining room in the building has 72 seats. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 14:00 on weekdays (last order 13:30) and from 11:30 to 14:30 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (last order 14:00), and dinner from 17:30 to 20:30 (last order 20:00)
• Kagura: Regular performances by kagura troupes from Hiroshima City are held on the second and fourth Sundays of every month

• Access (by bus): About 76 minutes on the Hiroden bus bound for "Yuki Lodge-mae" from the south exit of Itsukaichi Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line and the Hiroshima Electric Railway Miyajima Line. The fare is 1,000 yen one way, and the last bus back to Itsukaichi Station is at 19:30 on weekdays and 18:40 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
• Access (by car): About 40 minutes from the Itsukaichi Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway, or about 30 minutes from the Togouchi Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway
• A note on car navigation systems: Coming from the direction of Miyajima you may be directed along National Route 433 via Hatsukaichi, but the road is narrow and hard to pass on, so the route from Itsukaichi along Prefectural Route 41 is recommended instead. The same applies to National Route 488 from the direction of Yamaguchi
• Roads in winter: When there is snow, both the Togouchi Interchange and Yoshiwa Interchange routes become difficult, so using the Itsukaichi Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway is recommended
• Time required: About an hour for a bath alone. Allow half a day for a relaxed visit combining a meal and a rest in a guest room
