At the northwestern tip of Hyogo, Hamasaka in Shin-onsen Town is a fishing port known for landings of snow crab and firefly squid. Hamasaka Onsen is a chloride spring with a high source temperature of seventy-six degrees, and thanks to centralized management the water is piped not only to inns but to ordinary homes as well. In the heart of town, Utopia Hamasaka is an easygoing day-use bathing facility beloved by locals, with a spacious main bath and jet baths, perfect for a stop between sightseeing or a day at the beach.

Highlights

Beyond the roomy main bath, you can enjoy a bubble bath and jet baths said to be good for health and beauty. A large relaxation hall and a training room make it a gathering place for the community. Outside, a corner uses the heat of the spring to cook hot spring eggs, a small added pleasure.

Enjoying the Seasons

Winter brings the snow crab landed at Hamasaka port into season, drawing visitors for both the baths and the crab cuisine. Early spring is firefly squid season, offering seafood unique to the port town. In summer it is a handy stop-in bath after swimming at the nearby beach.

Access and Basic Information

It is conveniently located a few minutes by car from Hamasaka Station on the JR San-in Main Line. The water is a chloride spring with a high source temperature of seventy-six degrees. It pairs well with nearby springs such as Yumura Onsen and Shichikama Onsen. The facility keeps set hours and closing days, so check before you visit. It centers on day-use bathing, with a modest fee in the several-hundred-yen range.

Practical Travel Notes

In the summer swimming season the afternoon into evening tends to be crowded, so a morning bath is more relaxed. Allow about an hour and a half for a soak and a rest. Nearby you can enjoy Hamasaka Kenmin Sun Beach, direct sales of crab and firefly squid at the fishing port, and a stroll through the retro streets of the old town. The snow crab season opens in winter, when both inns and crab restaurants fill with reservations. This is an area best explored by car, and a spring-hopping trip combining Araayu at Yumura Onsen and Shichikama Onsen Yuraku-kan is recommended. Budget on the several-hundred-yen range for day-use bathing, while crab meals vary widely by season and restaurant.

A Quick Tip

With a modest admission fee, it is easy to drop by between sightseeing or beach time. Enjoying the fresh seafood of the port town after your bath rounds out a satisfying Hamasaka trip. The outdoor hot spring egg corner is popular with families, so give it a try if you have time.
