Sand Dune Rakkyo

🏜️ Tottori|July 3, 2026

Sand Dune Rakkyo

Sand dune rakkyo, grown in the dune fields beside the Tottori Sand Dunes, is a Tottori specialty boasting some of the finest quality in the whole country. The area centered on Fukube has well-drained sandy soil suited to growing rakkyo, and since full-scale cultivation began in the Taisho era it has developed into a leading production area for Japan. Its crisp bite and beautiful, pale white form are its great hallmarks.

Highlights

Grown freely in the sandy soil, sand dune rakkyo has firm flesh that offers a satisfying crisp texture with every bite. The classic sweet-vinegar pickle strikes an exquisite balance of tart and sweet, perfect alongside rice or as an accompaniment to sake. There is a rich variety of preparations such as salt pickles and soy pickles, each with its own appeal.

Enjoying the Seasons

Rakkyo is harvested in early summer, peaking around May and June. In this period fresh raw rakkyo appears throughout the production area, and many people pickle it at home. In autumn, the rakkyo fields bloom with a carpet of dainty pale-purple flowers, and the scenery paired with the dunes is a sight to see. Pickling seasonal raw rakkyo yourself is a pleasure found only in this region.

Access and Basic Information

It can be bought at farm stands around Fukube and at souvenir shops near the Tottori Sand Dunes. Many sales spots can be visited along the road from JR Tottori Station toward the dunes, and getting around by car is convenient. In autumn the rakkyo flower fields reach their peak, to be enjoyed together with dune sightseeing.

A Quick Tip

First try the classic sweet-vinegar pickle. As an accompaniment to curry, of course, but even just nibbled on its own, it lets you enjoy the pleasant texture unique to sand dune rakkyo.
