Arima Onsen Kin-no-yu and Gin-no-yu

Tucked into the hills behind Kobe, Arima Onsen is counted among the three oldest hot springs in Japan alongside Dogo and Shirahama. It offers two famous waters: the iron-rich, reddish-brown kinsen, and the clear, carbonated ginsen, each enjoyed at a public bathhouse in the heart of the old town. Strolling the historic slopes between baths is part of the charm.

Highlights

At the central Kin-no-yu bathhouse you can soak in the deeply colored kinsen, rich in iron and salt, which warms the body the moment you step in and keeps you cozy long after. A short walk away, Gin-no-yu offers the crisp, clear ginsen, praised for how soft it feels on the skin. After bathing, browse the souvenir shops and carbonated-cracker stalls lining the sloping streets.

Enjoying the Seasons

The hills around Arima shift with the seasons, fresh green in spring and brilliant foliage in autumn. The autumn color season is especially fine, when the whole town takes on warm tones and a walk between baths feels magical. Winter soaks in the warming kinsen chase away the cold, while the crisp ginsen feels refreshing in summer.

Access and Basic Information

Both Kin-no-yu and Gin-no-yu sit in the center of the Arima hot spring district, within walking distance of Arima Onsen Station on the Kobe Electric Railway. Highway buses from Kobe Sannomiya and Osaka are also convenient. The baths generally open from morning until night, with regular closing days, so check the latest schedule before you visit.

A Quick Tip

Because kinsen and ginsen differ so much, soaking in both if time allows is well worth it. The kinsen is darkly colored and can stain a towel, so bringing an older towel is a smart idea.
