Hokura Shrine, an Ancient Hilltop Sanctuary of Sacred Stones in Kobe
Hokura Shrine
Resting quietly on the Okamoto heights of Higashinada Ward in Kobe, Hokura Shrine is a little-known old sanctuary long cherished by local residents. Scattered across its grounds are enormous rocks called tateiwa, or standing stones, where ancient people are said to have offered prayers as far back as before the common era. Around a central rock known as Kaminari-iwa behind the main hall, the megaliths are arranged in a great circle, preserving to this day the vivid form of iwakura worship that binds the power of nature to human prayer.
The enshrined deities, led by Shiinetsuhiko no Mikoto, are known for a wide range of blessings, including success in business, health and longevity, and protection from misfortune.
