Ikuta Shrine — The 2,000-Year-Old Matchmaking Shrine in the Heart of Kobe

Tucked among the shopping streets of central Kobe, Ikuta Shrine is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines — its founding attributed to the legendary Empress Jingu in the early 3rd century. As a shrine dedicated to the deity Wakahirume no Mikoto, a weaving goddess associated with the arts and with romantic connection, Ikuta has long been revered as a powerful matchmaking (en-musubi) power spot. The Ikuta Shrine forest (Ikuta no Mori) is one of the last surviving green spaces in central Kobe and has been a source of cultural and poetic inspiration since the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology.
