Omika Jinja Shrine

Located in Omika, Hitachi City, Ibaraki, Omika Jinja is an old shrine said to have been founded in the first year of the imperial calendar. Its enshrined deities are Takehazuchi no Mikoto, a god of weaving, and Mikaboshi Kakaseo, a god of the stars. It is a power spot that carries the world of myth into the present.

The entire rocky hill on which the main hall stands is called Shukukonseki, a Cambrian stratum some 500 million years old, said to be among the oldest in Japan. A myth tells that the rough spirit of the star god is sealed here.

Highlights

- The Shukukonseki stratum, around 500 million years old, where you can touch a rock face that records the memory of the ancient earth - A rocky hill with chain holds, which you climb for about five minutes in a mini-climbing mood to reach and worship at the main hall set upon the rock - A grove designated a Natural Monument by Hitachi City, the rich forest enveloping the precinct being a sight in itself

Enjoying the Seasons

In the seasons of fresh green and autumn color, the contrast of rocky hill and forest stands out beautifully. Since the rock climb depends on weather, a sunny day is recommended. The experience of touching an ancient stratum in clear air stays in the heart no matter the season.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Omika, Hitachi City, Ibaraki - Public transport: about 15 minutes on foot from Omika Station on the JR Joban Line - By car: about 10 minutes north on Route 6 from the Hitachi Minami Ota IC on the Joban Expressway - Parking available
