Hitachi Seaside Park and Oarai Coastal Course

This course links two of the leading spots on Ibarakis coastal side, the national Hitachi Seaside Park and Oarai. The parks stunning scenery, with nemophila in spring and kochia in autumn coloring an entire hill, is famous across the country. In Oarai you can enjoy the Aqua World aquarium and harbor seafood, spending a full day feeling the Pacific breeze.

Course Route

9:30 Arrive at Hitachi Seaside Park The vast grounds are best explored by rental bicycle. First head toward the parks famous Miharashi Hill.

10:00 Flower scenery on Miharashi Hill In spring blue nemophila and in autumn crimson kochia fill the hill. The view where sky, sea, and flowers blend together is breathtaking.

12:00 Lunch and Ferris wheel in the park After taking in the whole park from the giant Ferris wheel, have a light lunch at one of the park restaurants.

13:30 Move to Oarai Drive about thirty minutes south to the seaside town of Oarai.

14:00 Visit Aqua World Oarai At this aquarium known for its many shark species, enjoy the powerful large tank and the dolphin show.

16:00 Oarai seafood gourmet Savor fresh seafood at a shop near the harbor, closing the day with anglerfish hot pot or a set meal of local fish.

Highlights

The nemophila and kochia hill peaks at different times depending on the years climate. Checking the bloom status before your visit brings peace of mind. The torii gate of Oarai Isosaki Shrine standing in the sea looks especially mystical when lit by the morning sun, making it popular with photographers.

Access and Tips

Because the seaside park and Oarai are some distance apart, traveling by car is smoothest. For public transport, combine buses and trains and plan with extra time for the schedules. The park is large, so comfortable clothing is recommended.
