Japan offers a huge range of places to stay, each with its own character and price point. Here's how to choose the right one for each night of your trip.

Business hotels

• Compact, clean, great-value hotels found near stations across the country.
• Small but efficient rooms with a private bathroom, everything you need for a comfortable night.
• Ideal base for sightseeing when you mainly need a place to sleep.

Capsule hotels

• A famous Japanese invention: you sleep in a compact pod with shared facilities.
• Very affordable, surprisingly comfortable, and a fun experience.
• Traditionally separated by gender; many offer lockers, lounges and shared baths.
• Great for solo travellers and short stays.

Hostels & guesthouses

• Budget-friendly, with dormitory or private rooms and communal areas.
• A sociable way to meet other travellers and swap tips.
• Often run by friendly hosts with good local knowledge.

Ryokan (traditional inns)

• A cultural experience: tatami rooms, futon bedding, yukata, and often onsen baths and multi-course meals.

Booking tips

• Check location relative to a train station — it saves time and tired feet.
