Traveling in Japan with Kids: Strollers, Nursing & Family Tips

Japan is a wonderfully safe, clean and welcoming place to travel with children. With a little know-how, family trips here are smooth and genuinely fun for all ages.

Getting around with a stroller

• Big stations and department stores have elevators, but they can be tucked away and busy — allow extra time.
• Trains get very crowded at rush hour; travel off-peak with a stroller if you can, and be ready to fold it in tight spaces.
• Many families use a baby carrier for busy areas and stairs, and a stroller elsewhere.

Nursing & baby care

• Department stores, malls, and many public facilities have baby/nursing rooms (jusshitsu) with nursing areas, changing tables, and often hot water for formula.
• Baby-changing tables are common in accessible/multipurpose toilets.
• Convenience stores and drugstores sell diapers, wipes, formula and baby food.

Eating out with children

• Family restaurants (famiresu) are great: relaxed, with kids' menus, high chairs and picture menus.
• Food courts and casual eateries welcome families.
• Convenience stores and supermarkets make easy, cheap meals for fussy eaters.
• Mention any allergies with an allergy card in Japanese.

Fun for kids

• Aquariums, zoos, science museums and observation decks are big hits.

• Many parks and playgrounds are free and give little ones space to run.
• Character-themed shops and attractions delight many children.

Practical tips

• Japan is very safe, and staff are helpful, but agree a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.
• Carry your child's essentials; while supplies are easy to buy, specific brands may differ.
