Staying Connected in Japan: SIM Cards, eSIM and Pocket Wi-Fi

Reliable internet makes navigating Japan much easier — for maps, train times, translation and restaurant hunting. You have three main options.

1. Travel SIM card

Prepaid data SIM cards for tourists are sold at airports, major electronics stores and online. They are usually data-only (no local phone number), which is fine for maps and messaging apps. Choose a plan based on how many days and how much data you need.

2. eSIM

If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy and activate a Japan data plan online, often before you arrive, and switch it on when you land. This avoids swapping physical cards.

3. Pocket Wi-Fi rental

A pocket Wi-Fi device gives several people a shared connection. You typically reserve online, pick it up at the airport (or have it posted to your hotel), and return it at the end of your trip. Good for families or groups.

Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, many train stations, convenience stores and cafes. Some networks ask you to register with an email address first. Free Wi-Fi is useful as a backup but can be patchy, so most travellers prefer their own SIM or device.

Which should you choose?

• Solo / light user: a data SIM or eSIM.
• Family or group: pocket Wi-Fi to share one connection.
• Very short trip: free Wi-Fi plus an offline map may be enough.

Sort out connectivity before or immediately on arrival, and the rest of your trip becomes far smoother.
