What to Wear in Japan: Weather & Packing by Season

Japan stretches a long way north to south and has four distinct seasons, so what you pack depends on when and where you go.

Spring (roughly March–May)

• Mild and pleasant, the season of cherry blossoms.
• Early spring can still be chilly; pack layers and a light jacket.
• A lovely time to travel, but famous spots are busy.

Summer (roughly June–August)

• Hot and very humid, especially July and August.
• June into July brings the rainy season (tsuyu) in much of the country — carry an umbrella.
• Pack light, breathable clothing, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Heat and humidity are serious — stay hydrated and take breaks.
• Typhoons are more likely late summer into autumn; watch the forecast.

Autumn (roughly September–November)

• Cooling and comfortable, ending in spectacular autumn leaves.
• Layers again, as mornings and evenings turn crisp.
• Another popular and beautiful season.

Winter (roughly December–February)

• Cold, with big regional differences. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are chilly but see little snow; the Sea of Japan side and the north (Tohoku, Hokkaido) get heavy snow.
• Pack a warm coat, and proper snow gear if heading to snowy regions or the mountains.
• The south (Okinawa) stays much milder.

Universal packing tips

• Comfortable walking shoes — you will walk a lot, and many places require removing shoes, so slip-on styles help.
• A compact umbrella is useful year-round.
• Layers suit Japan's indoor heating/cooling and changeable weather.

Because conditions vary each year, check a local weather forecast close to your trip and adjust. Dress for the season and region, and every day is more comfortable.
