Despite its image as a tropical-feeling southern prefecture, Kagoshima's mountains and gorges transform into breathtaking gradations of red, orange, and yellow when autumn arrives. Due to the warm climate, the foliage arrives somewhat later than in other parts of Japan — typically peaking between early October and late November, with the colors descending from higher elevations to lower areas in classic Kagoshima autumn fashion.

"Autumn foliage in Kagoshima?" may surprise some people, but the mountainous Kirishima highland and the gorge areas in the central part of the prefecture provide autumn colors of remarkable quality. The warm climate concentrates the pigments in the leaves, producing vivid, saturated colors quite different from the cooler-toned foliage of Tohoku or Hokkaido.

Kirishima — Volcanic Highland Autumn Colors

The Kirishima volcanic range, straddling the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures and encompassing some 20 volcanic peaks, is Kagoshima's premier destination for autumn foliage. The area around the Ebino Kogen (Ebino Plateau) — an upland plateau at approximately 1,200 meters elevation — is particularly spectacular, with the combination of volcanic lakes, open moorland, and mountain ridgelines providing a dramatic backdrop for the autumn color.

The famous Ebino Kogen "colored leaf pond walk" (irodori-ike meguri) passes through open moorland with views of the volcanic peaks and circles a series of small crater lakes whose surfaces reflect the autumn sky and surrounding colors. In peak season, the circular walk is a sequence of extraordinary views.

Best Season

The Ebino Kogen plateau typically peaks in late October — some of the earliest autumn color in Kagoshima.

From JR Kirishima-Jingu Station, take the Kyushu Sanko Bus to the Ebino Kogen bus stop (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes). By car from the Miyazaki Expressway Kobayashi IC, approximately 30 minutes.

Kurino-dake (Kuri Highland) — Deep Autumn Valley Color

The Kurino-dake area in Yusui Town, at approximately 1,102 meters elevation in the mountains of central Kagoshima, is one of the prefecture's finest autumn color spots for valley scenery. The forested hills of the Kuri highland turn brilliant red and gold in late autumn, and the wide panorama from the various viewpoints along the highland road — with layers of colorful ridgelines receding into the distance — is of exceptional beauty.

The Kuri-no-dake Observatory viewpoint is the most popular spot, offering a sweeping 180-degree view over the autumn valley. On clear days, the distant silhouette of Sakurajima can be seen floating above the colored ridgelines — a uniquely Kagoshima combination of volcanic geography and autumn scenery.

Best Season

Early November is typically the peak for the Kuri highland, according to the Kagoshima Prefectural Tourism Federation. The later timing makes it an excellent alternative for visitors who miss the Kirishima plateau peak in late October.

Access

By car from the Kyushu Expressway Aira IC, approximately 30 minutes. The highland road is not easily accessible by public transport — a car is strongly recommended.

Gamo-no-Okusu (Gamo Giant Camphor Tree) — Ancient Tree in Autumn

Though not a foliage spot in the conventional sense, the ancient giant camphor tree at Kamo Hachimangu Shrine (蒲生八幡神社) in Gamo-cho, Aira City, is one of Kagoshima's most extraordinary natural monuments and deserves mention in any discussion of the prefecture's autumn attractions. The tree — estimated to be over 1,500 years old and one of Japan's largest camphor trees — stands in the shrine precincts with a presence that is genuinely overwhelming. In autumn, the maples and other deciduous trees in the shrine forest turn vivid colors around the base of the enormous evergreen camphor trunk.

The contrast between the ancient green camphor trunk, enormous beyond comprehension, and the red and gold autumn foliage around it creates a scene of surreal natural drama.

Best Season

Mid to late November for the surrounding autumn color. The camphor tree itself is evergreen and impressive year-round.

Access

From JR Chosa Station or Kinko Station, take the Aira City community bus (about 20–30 minutes; buses are infrequent — check the timetable in advance). By car from the Kyushu Expressway Aira IC, approximately 20 minutes.

Tips for Enjoying Autumn Foliage in Kagoshima

• Time your visit: Kagoshima's foliage peaks later than the rest of Japan, typically November. Kirishima plateau peaks in mid-October; valley and coastal areas peak in November. Plan accordingly.
• Combine with volcanic scenery: Kagoshima's unique volcanic landscape — especially around Kirishima and the ever-active Sakurajima — provides extraordinary context for autumn foliage. The combination of volcanic geology and autumn color is found nowhere else.
• Drive the highland roads: The most beautiful foliage in Kagoshima is concentrated on mountain highland roads not easily accessible by public transport. A rental car is strongly recommended for the best experience.
• Try local autumn produce: Kagoshima's autumn harvest includes new sweet potatoes (satsumaimo), Satsuma mandarin oranges (satsuma mikan), and freshly harvested rice. Local farmstands and markets along the highland roads offer excellent produce.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

Kirishima is a foliage destination set right in the middle of an active volcanic zone. As of September 2026, Shinmoedake is under Volcanic Alert Level 2, and restrictions are in place on hiking trails and roads. The following is a summary of information published by the Japan Meteorological Agency, Kirishima City, Ebino City, and the Kagoshima Prefecture Tourism Federation. Please check the latest situation on each official page again just before you set out.

First: Volcanic Alert Levels and Access Restrictions

The Level 2 alert for Shinmoedake was issued by the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory and Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory at 16:00 on 4 September, Reiwa 8 (2026). No eruption has been observed since 8 September 2025, but the restrictions remain in force. The volume of volcanic gas (sulphur dioxide) measured on 2 September, Reiwa 8 (2026) was 100 tonnes per day. Please do not stop near the crater or fumaroles.

Hiking Trail Restrictions

The restrictions published by Ebino City (last updated 17 October 2025) are as follows.

What deserves particular attention is that this restriction information page itself is out of date. Ebino City's page was last updated on 17 October 2025, and Kirishima City's hiking restriction page was last updated on 20 October 2025; neither has been updated as of September 2026. The content on these pages reflects "the situation as of October 2025," so please do not take them at face value — contacting Ebino City or Kirishima City by telephone to confirm the current situation is the safest course of action.

Miyazaki Prefectural Route 1: Normally Closed, Open Daytime Weekends Only

According to Ebino City (updated 3 September 2026) and the Kirishima City Tourism Association, the section of Miyazaki Prefectural Route 1 (Kobayashi-Ebino Plateau-Makizono Line) from "near the Kokedake trailhead" to "the junction with Miyazaki Prefectural Route 30 (Ebino Plateau-Oda Line)" is completely closed to traffic. However, there is an exception.

• Open temporarily on Saturdays and Sundays only, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Only roofed motor vehicles may use it (motorcycles and bicycles are not permitted)
• The road may close without notice if gas concentrations rise
• Kagoshima Prefectural Route 1 is open (the restriction applies to the Miyazaki prefectural road side only)

Anyone planning to drive to Ebino Plateau on a weekday needs to factor this restriction directly into their itinerary.

Shinkawa Valley Nature Trail: Currently Inaccessible

According to the "Kirishima Autumn Foliage Conditions" page on the Kirishima City website, the Shinkawa Valley Nature Trail has been inaccessible since heavy rain damage on 7–8 August 2025 (Reiwa 7). No restoration schedule has been given officially. The trail still appears on foliage spot lists, so take care not to head there as a destination without noticing the small-print notice.

Note that the connecting bus stop listed on the same page for buses to "Maruoi" has been changed from "Shiobitari Hatsudensho-mae" to "Shinkawa Valley" following a landslide in November 2025.

Buses

• Kirishima Mountain Circular Bus (Maruoi – Onami-ike trailhead – Ebino Plateau – Takachiho-gawara): timetable revised 1 October 2025; a revised April 2026 timetable is also available. The bus operator's official information states that some sections may be suspended if Shinmoedake's volcanic alert level rises. At the current level (Level 2), services are running normally. Enquiries: Kagoshima Kotsu Kokubu Office 0995-45-6733.
• Kirishima-jingu Access Bus: On weekends and public holidays during the foliage season, the standard dedicated bus (24 seats) has sometimes been switched to a chartered type (48 seats). In 2025, this switch took effect from Saturday 9 November, but the 2026 schedule has not been announced.

Takachiho-gawara Car Park

• Cars ¥500, motorcycles ¥200, large buses ¥2,000 (24-hour rate)
• This is a coin-operated car park. ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 notes cannot be used. Please bring ¥1,000 notes and coins.
• Open at all times (no closures)
• The Takachiho-gawara Visitor Centre is open 9:00–17:00, free admission. The Park Service Centre (free rest area) is also open 9:00–17:00.

As of September 2026, no official announcements have been made for any of the foliage-related events. Please do not plan this year's schedule using last year's dates.

• Kirishima Koyo Matsuri (Kirishima Shinwa-no-Sato Park): held on Sunday 30 November 2025, 9:00–17:00. 2026 date not yet announced (Kirishima Shinwa-no-Sato Park: 0995-57-1711).
• Sogi Falls Momiji Festival: held 15–24 November 2025 with illumination 18:00–21:00. 2026 date not yet announced.
• Yusui Town Kogen Festa (Kurinodake): typically held in early November. 2026 date not yet announced.
• Kirishima-jingu Shrine foliage illumination: no information found on the official website; whether an event takes place at all is unknown.

Impact of the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake

In a governor's message dated 7 August 2026, Kagoshima Prefecture confirmed that accommodation facilities and tourist facilities within the prefecture are operating as normal following the Kumamoto earthquake that occurred on 28 July, Reiwa 8 (2026). At the same time, some sections of the Kyushu Shinkansen had suspended services and part of the Kyushu Expressway was closed; at the time of the governor's message, the Shinkansen situation was described as "a resumption this month would be difficult." The current transport situation as of September 2026 should be confirmed separately. No official reports of direct damage to tourist facilities in the Kirishima area have been issued.

Kirishima City's "Kirishima Autumn Foliage Conditions" page was last updated on 22 December 2025, with the current status of each spot still displaying "fallen leaves." The timings given in this article are all "typical peak periods" as indicated by official sources and are not confirmed information for 2026.
