A Southern Spring That Arrives a Step Early

Kagoshima is a mild land located at the southern tip of Kyushu, where spring arrives a step earlier than on Honshu. Thanks to the relatively warm climate even in winter, flowers begin to bloom from early spring, and the appeal is that you can enjoy the colors of spring for a long time. The scenery woven by flowers in full bloom against the magnificent figure of the symbolic Sakurajima is unique to Kagoshima. The view in which the sea, the volcano, and the flowers become one is a grand beauty seen nowhere else. Under the soft southern sunshine, you can fully enjoy a spring that comes a step early.

Cherry-Blossom Spots Overlooking Sakurajima

In Kagoshima there are scattered famous spots where you can enjoy cherry blossoms with Sakurajima as a backdrop. The scenery woven by Sakurajima floating in Kinko Bay and the cherry blossoms in full bloom is a spectacular view unique to Kagoshima. In city parks and along seaside cherry-tree-lined roads, you can enjoy flower viewing while overlooking the magnificent volcano. There are also many spots where you can admire cherry blossoms together with historic sites that evoke Kagoshima's history, so you can enjoy both a historical stroll and flower viewing at once. The charm of Kagoshima's cherry blossoms is that you can leisurely enjoy the colors of spring under a mild climate.

Cherry-Blossom Spots to See Together with Sakurajima

• Sengan-en, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty (Yoshino-cho, Kagoshima City): A villa built in 1658 (Manji 1) by Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu family, it is a magnificent borrowed-scenery garden that treats Sakurajima as its artificial hill and Kinko Bay as its pond. It covers about 15,000 tsubo (roughly 50,000 square meters). There are about 150 cherry trees, and the viewing season runs long, usually from early February to early April. The surrounding Iso area was inscribed in 2015 (Heisei 27) as part of the World Cultural Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution."
• Kagoshima Prefectural Yoshino Park (Yoshino-cho, Kagoshima City): From the observation deck on high ground at an elevation of 234 meters, you can see Sakurajima across Kinko Bay and, on clear days, as far as the Kirishima mountain range and Mt. Kaimon. There are 12 varieties of cherry. Fifteen Kawazu-zakura trees take on color around mid-February, while about 630 Somei-yoshino are at their best from late March to early April.
• Kotsukigawa Left Bank and Right Bank Green Spaces (Kagoshima City): Promenades lined with about 500 cherry trees run along both banks of the Kotsukigawa as it flows through the city center. The viewing season is late March to early April.
• Sakurajima Nature Dinosaur Park (Sakurajima Yokoyama-cho, Kagoshima City): About 460 cherry trees in a natural park of some 50,000 square meters. Crossing by ferry to hold your flower viewing on the volcanic island itself is very much the Kagoshima way.
• Tadamoto Park (Okuchi Harada, Isa City): Known for a cherry-lined avenue stretching about 2 kilometers, it was selected in 1990 (Heisei 2) as one of the 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan. During the viewing season a thousand lanterns are lit, so you can enjoy two different faces by day and by night. The viewing season is late March to early April.

Plum Blossoms, Which Bloom Before the Cherries

Fujikawa Tenjin in Togo-cho, Satsumasendai City, is an ancient shrine enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and is also known as Sugawara Shrine. The plum garden in its precinct holds about 300 plum trees, said to have grown and spread from a single tree planted by Michizane himself. Fifty-five of them have trunks that lie along the ground, and because their form resembles a dragon they are called garyubai, or reclining-dragon plums. They open their pale pink flowers from mid-February to early March in a typical year, filling the garden with a sweet fragrance. Because this overlaps with the season when the rapeseed blossoms of Ibusuki are at their best, in February you can tour two flowerscapes in Kagoshima one after the other, yellow and pale crimson.

Photography Tips and a Flower Calendar Beyond Spring

For a shot with Sakurajima as a backdrop, the key is a composition that holds both the volcano and the flowers in the same frame. Looking out across Kinko Bay from high ground, as at Sengan-en or Yoshino Park, layers flowers, sea, and mountain in three tiers and creates a sense of depth. The direction in which the volcanic plume drifts depends on the wind, so waiting for a moment when the mountainside is clearly visible is one approach. At spots where lanterns are lit, such as Tadamoto Park, the time just after sunset, while a little blue still lingers in the sky, lets you capture both the blossoms and the lights. Nor is spring the only season for flowers. Kagoshima Prefecture's tourism site also introduces seasonal flower spots such as hydrangeas in early summer and sunflowers, water lilies, and lotuses in summer, and the fun of a flower tour in Kagoshima is that you can layer a differently colored foreground over the same Sakurajima in each season.

Early-Spring Rapeseed Blossoms Overlooking Mt. Kaimon

Another flower that colors Kagoshima's early spring is the rapeseed blossom. In Ibusuki City, rapeseed blossoms reach their best at various places around the city from around late December to early February in a typical year. In particular, the shore of Lake Ikeda, the largest caldera lake in Kyushu, offers an early-spring scene of note, with Mt. Kaimon, also called "Satsuma Fuji," rising beyond a carpet of yellow flowers. In January the Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon is also held to coincide with the peak of the blossoms. Nagasakibana, at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, is a lookout point overlooking Mt. Kaimon and the sea, and it is worth visiting as part of an early-spring drive. Best Season and Access

Rapeseed blossoms are usually at their best from late December to early February, and cherry blossoms from late March to early April (blooming times shift somewhat from year to year). For access, head to each area by car or bus from Kagoshima Airport or JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station. You can cross to Sakurajima by ferry from Kagoshima Port. For the Ibusuki and Mt. Kaimon area, the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line or travel by car is convenient. It is also recommended to tour these together with hot springs and sightseeing that touches on the history of Satsuma. Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best time to see it / best season: The rape blossoms in Ibusuki City are usually at their best from late December to early February (the shore of Lake Ikeda is especially famous, and the peak often falls in January). The cherry blossoms are usually at their best from late March to early April. Both shift from year to year, so check the latest blooming information such as the "Ibusuki Flower Calendar" of the Ibusuki City Tourism Association.
• Event period / illuminations: The "Ibusuki Rape Blossom Marathon" is usually held in January.
• Access: Kagoshima Airport or JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station is the starting point. For Ibusuki and Mount Kaimon, the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line or a car is convenient. Sakurajima can be reached by ferry from Kagoshima Port.
• Clothing and equipment: Although this is the far south, mornings and evenings in January and February are cold, and the wind is strong along the shore of Lake Ikeda and by the sea. A windproof jacket will put your mind at ease. Rape blossom fields and farmland may be private property, so use the designated footpaths and car parks.

* The "Chiririn Road," the sandbar that lets you walk across to Chiringashima Island (Ibusuki City), usually appears at low tide during spring tides and middle tides from March to October (it is about 800 m long). Check the dates and times it appears in the "Sandbar Appearance Forecast Table" published by Ibusuki City. Note that because of the torrential rain of Reiwa 6 (2024) it is not possible to walk around the island itself, but crossing the sandbar is possible (guidance as of 2026). The tide level changes quickly, so always check the time you need to head back before you cross.
