Osumi Peninsula and Cape Sata: Japan's Southernmost Tip with Views of Mt. Kaimon

The Osumi Peninsula lies quietly on the eastern side of Kinko Bay. There is no mainland beyond this point: that feeling stirs the heart at Cape Sata, the symbol of the mainland southern tip. Beyond a green tunnel of subtropical plants, the observatory opens onto the East China Sea and the Pacific in a single sweep. On clear days you can make out the outlines of Yakushima and Tanegashima with the naked eye, a panorama that leaves many visitors speechless. The Cape Sata Lighthouse, first lit in 1871, is one of the oldest Western-style lighthouses in Japan, and its white form against the blue sea is not to be missed. The 31st parallel north passes just above the cape, a reminder that this truly is the southern edge of the mainland.

Ogawa Falls

Ogawa Falls went viral on social media in 2019 as an otherworldly sight, and its fame endures as one of the finest scenes on the Osumi Peninsula. A white cascade thunders down into a plunge pool of an almost unbelievable emerald green. Because the water is so clear, light reaches the deep bottom, creating a fantastical color like dissolved jewels: a genuine wonder that photographs cannot fully convey. A walking path of roughly 40 minutes each way leads from the parking area to the viewpoint.

Osumi Cuisine

Scenery is not the only pleasure here. The Osumi Peninsula is one of Japan leading producers of eel, and around Kanoya City, blessed with a mild climate and abundant groundwater, traditional eel-farming techniques live on. Grilled slowly over charcoal, the eel is thick, fluffy, and gently fragrant. Osumi is also known for its black pork and black beef, so grilled meat and local dishes are worth seeking out. Roadside stations serve local specialties and fresh produce.

Seasonal Enjoyment

Cape Sata is mild year-round, but spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November), when the air is clearest, are best, raising the odds of seeing Mount Kaimon and the islands. Early morning offers beautiful light and fewer visitors, letting you savor the southernmost air in peace. Ogawa Falls is at its most powerful just after the rainy season in July and August, while the fresh greenery of April and May gives a fine contrast of green and water. The emerald pool stands out most from about 10 a.m. to noon, when sunlight reaches it.

The Osumi Peninsula is large and its main spots are spread out, so a car and a generous schedule are the keys to the trip. Gas stations grow scarcer toward the southern tip, so fill up early in Kanoya, and prepare an offline map for stretches of weak signal. The stillness of the mainland southern tip and the panorama toward Mount Kaimon are worth the detour.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Cape Sata (Sata Misaki Park): Open from 8:00 in the morning until sunset, admission free, 70 parking spaces. The Cape Sata tourist information center is open 9:00-17:00. It is about 800 m one way from the entrance tunnel to the observation deck (the main observation deck route has no steps, but the slopes are steep, so wheelchair users need assistance; power-assisted wheelchairs are lent out at the information center)
• Cape Sata Lighthouse: Standing on Owajima, an island about 50 m off the tip of the cape, it is one of the eight lighthouses built under the "Edo Treaty." It was first lit on October 18 in Meiji 4 (1871); the original was badly damaged in an air raid in Showa 20 (1945), and the present lighthouse was rebuilt in May of Showa 25 (1950). It is one of the "50 Best Lighthouses of Japan"
• Ogawa Falls: Open from 8:00 in the morning until sunset, 70 parking spaces. A visitor contribution system was introduced on July 1 of Reiwa 6 (2024), with fees of 300 yen for adults (junior high school age and over), 150 yen for elementary school children and free for preschool children. The walking path is about 1,200 m one way (the official guide suggests allowing about 60 minutes), and bamboo walking sticks are lent out at the entrance. Access is restricted when the path floods after rain, and swimming in the river or the plunge pool is not allowed. The path is also not passable in a wheelchair
• Note on the water volume at Ogawa Falls: Because of renewal work at Kyushu Electric Power's Ogawa power station, the flow over the falls will be higher from February 7, 2025 until October 2028 (planned), and alternating one-way traffic will be in place on the surrounding roads. Your chances of seeing the emerald-green plunge pool are highest when fine weather has continued and the water volume is low
• Ferries: Kamoike Port (Kagoshima city) to and from Tarumizu Port takes about 40 minutes, with 19 round trips a day on weekdays and 26 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. From the Satsuma Peninsula side, the Ferry Nankyu between Nejime Port and Yamagawa Port takes about 50 minutes (from March to October, 4 round trips on weekdays and 5 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; from November to February, 4 round trips a day)
