Kamakura Ancient Capital Stroll Course

This walking course takes you through Kamakura, the old capital of the samurai government, all on foot in a single day. It suits anyone who loves visiting shrines and temples, or first time visitors to Kamakura. The walking distance is on the longer side, but the sights are packed in. Plan about six hours, with plenty of room for lunch and sweets.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Kamakura Station The popular Komachi Street is still quiet. Setting off in the morning before the crowds is the key.

9:15 Visit Tsurugaoka Hachimangu The symbol of Kamakura. Walk the broad grounds and the raised approach, then enjoy the view from the main shrine.

10:30 Snack along Komachi Street Nibble on Japanese sweets, croquettes and matcha treats as you head back toward the station.

11:30 Take the Enoden to Hase Ride the little Enoden line from Kamakura Station, a small seaside train trip that is a pleasure in itself.

12:00 Meet the Great Buddha at Kotokuin The bronze Buddha standing under the open sky is truly powerful. You can even step inside the statue.

13:00 Sweeping sea views at Hasedera From the hilltop terrace the beach of Yuigahama opens up before you. The temple is also famous for hydrangeas.

14:30 Finish with a walk along Yuigahama Stroll the sand to the sound of the waves and round off your day in the old capital.
