Enoshima Sightseeing Guide — The Jewel of Shonan

The symbol of Shonan, Enoshima is a small island packed with attractions. From Enoshima Shrine dedicated to a deity of matchmaking, to the mysterious Iwaya sea caves, and the Sea Candle observation lighthouse with views of Mt. Fuji, it is full of appeal. With seaside atmosphere, rich nature, and good food, Enoshima is an ideal resort island reachable as a day trip from central Tokyo.

Enoshima is a small connected island, about four kilometers in circumference, lying off the Shonan coast in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa. Long cherished as an island of faith and scenic beauty, it has drawn crowds of worshippers and sightseers. Cross the Benten Bridge over the sea and the approach fills with souvenir shops and eateries. The island has many slopes and stairways, but in return offers beautiful sea views at every turn.

At the island heart, Enoshima Shrine is a venerable shrine made up of three halls: Hetsumiya, Nakatsumiya, and Okutsumiya. It enshrines three sister goddesses collectively revered as Benzaiten. Known for blessings in the arts, wealth, and matchmaking, it counts among the three great Benzaiten shrines of Japan. There is also the Ryuren Bell, popular with couples.

From the Enoshima Sea Candle observation lighthouse at the island summit, a wide panorama opens over the Shonan sea and, on clear days, all the way to Mt. Fuji. It can be enjoyed year round, but summer when the sea is beautiful and winter when Mt. Fuji stands out clearly are both recommended. In winter, the illumination known as the Jewel of Shonan colors the island, making an evening stroll magical. Spring (March to May) has a mild climate ideal for coastal walks. Bowls of raw shirasu whitebait are available during the shirasu fishing season, generally from around March to year end; in the closed season, boiled shirasu is the standard.

Access and Essentials

• Access: about 5 minutes on foot from Katase-Enoshima Station on the Odakyu Enoshima Line, or about 15 minutes from Enoshima Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway

Practical Travel Notes

The best times are a weekday morning, easier for avoiding crowds, or the evening for sunset and illumination. As a time guide, allow about two hours for the approach and Enoshima Shrine alone, or about four to five hours to include the Sea Candle and Iwaya Caves. For budget, the combined admission fees run from the low thousands of yen, or several thousand yen including meals. Nearby are real spots such as Katase Beach and the Enoshima Aquarium, and pairing with Kamakura via the Enoden is also a classic route. The island has many slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

A Word of Advice

If you plan to visit several facilities, check at the entrance for a discounted combination ticket such as the Enoshima 1-Day Passport, which bundles the Sea Candle, Iwaya Caves and more. The Iwaya Caves are dimly lit inside, so watch your footing. On weekends and holidays the whole island grows very crowded, so an early morning arrival or a weekday visit is recommended.
