Enoshima and Shonan Coast Course

This course takes you around Enoshima, the symbol of Shonan, on foot while gazing at the sea. Shrine visits, sweeping views and seafood are all packed onto this little island. It is perfect for a date or a short trip with friends. Plan about six hours, and staying until the sunset hour makes the day even more memorable.

Course Route

10:30 Start at Katase Enoshima Station A station building like a sea palace greets you. Cross the bridge toward the island.

11:00 Snack along the Benzaiten Nakamise shopping street Walk the lively approach lined with Shonan specialties such as whitebait rice bowls and octopus crackers.

11:45 Visit Enoshima Shrine An old shrine counted among the three great Benten shrines of Japan. Climb the steps as you head up the island.

12:30 Rest at the Samuel Cocking Garden Catch your breath in this garden blending Japanese and Western styles, surrounded by seasonal flowers.

13:00 Sweeping views from the Enoshima Sea Candle From atop the observation lighthouse you can see Mount Fuji, the Izu Peninsula and Sagami Bay.

14:00 Take in the rocks and waves at Chigogafuchi A wave cut terrace at the tip of the island. The crashing waves and cliffs make a powerful sight.

15:00 Explore the Enoshima Iwaya caves to finish Walk the caves carved by the waves and enjoy their mysterious mood to close the day.

Access and Tips

- You can walk to the island from the Odakyu Katase Enoshima Station and the Enoden and Shonan Monorail stations - The island has many steps and slopes, so the paid escalator helps save your energy - The caves and Chigogafuchi involve walking along the shore, so comfortable shoes are recommended - Chigogafuchi is famous for sunsets, so checking the sunset time before you visit makes it special

A Quick Tip

Enoshima has a lot of climbing up and down, and you walk more than you expect. Stopping at a teahouse for a whitebait bowl or a sweet, and resting while you look out at the sea, keeps the whole day pleasant to the end.
