• The most recommended time is early morning, 6 to 8 a.m. Morning mist drifts slowly over the river surface, and the scene of the submersible bridge and autumn foliage emerging in the dim light is so fantastically beautiful you'll be left speechless. The hours of 9 to 11 a.m., when the light stabilizes, are also ideal for photography, allowing you to aim for the "reflection" where the colors of the autumn leaves are clearly mirrored on the water. Afternoons on sunny days tend to be backlit, so pay attention to the direction of the light.

Ways to Enjoy It Like a Local It would be a waste to only gaze at the Shimanto River—if you join the autumn foliage canoe tour offered seasonally by local canoe experience operators, you can encounter a spectacular view from the water that is absolutely invisible from the riverbank. The experience of slowly paddling through a tunnel of colored trees is a special time that captivates adults and children alike. Also, at the roadside station "Shimanto Towa" along the shore, you can enjoy sweets made with locally grown chestnuts and salt-grilled wild sweetfish (ayu), a blessing of autumn. Tips for Travelers

• On weekends during the autumn foliage season, parking lots around the submersible bridge may fill up from early hours. Visiting on a weekday morning is the best strategy
• The submersible bridge has no railings at all, and rainy days or wet road surfaces are extremely slippery, so be sure to wear sneakers or trekking shoes with good grip. Sandals and leather shoes are strictly prohibited
• The morning and evening cold along the river is far more severe than in the city. Bringing an extra light down jacket or layerable outerwear will give you peace of mind
• Canoe tours have small capacities and fill up quickly during the season. Reserving 2 to 3 weeks in advance is ideal

Ryugado Cave

When it comes to Ryugado Cave, designated a national natural monument, most people probably first picture "cave sightseeing." Ways to Enjoy It Like a Local Near Ryugado there is a farm-direct sales outlet run directly by local farmers, where, only in autumn, the season's first Tosa buntan citrus and mountain delicacies are lined up. The fresh fragrance of buntan, a citrus representative of Kochi, and the lingering impression of autumn foliage—stopping by on the way home and taking some as a gift is the connoisseur's local way to enjoy. Also, the cave interior is rich with historical exhibits such as "Yayoi-period pottery," letting you savor three appeals—nature, history, and food culture—at one place simultaneously.

Hidden Gem Info On the way from the parking lot toward the cave entrance, just a little into a side path with no signpost, there is a small autumn foliage clearing known only to those in the know. Since there is no sign, most tourists miss it, but please peek in with a little spirit of adventure.

• Train + Bus: From "Tosa-Yamada Station" on the JR Dosan Line, about 20 minutes by the "Ryugado Line" community bus, getting off at the "Ryugado" bus stop. Tosa-Yamada Station is about 20 minutes from Kochi Station by local train, a conveniently located spot with easy access.
• Car: About 30 minutes from the "Nankoku IC" on the Kochi Expressway via National Route 195

Tips for Travelers

• On weekends and holidays during the autumn foliage season, a temporary parking lot is set up, but crowds get serious after 10 a.m. Aiming to arrive before 9 a.m. is the secret to enjoying it comfortably
• The cave interior has a large temperature difference from the outside air and is also quite humid. Since you'll get cold all at once if you enter while sweaty, put a light cardigan or thermal inner layer in your bag
• Part of the hiking course has steep slopes and stone steps. We strongly recommend visiting in trekking shoes or sneakers with good grip
• Since there are areas where flash photography is prohibited in the cave, having a smartphone or camera with a bright lens strong in low-light shooting will come in handy

Okumonobe

Okumonobe, also called "the inner parlor of Kochi," is a secluded autumn foliage region barely developed for tourism, which locals all describe as "this is the real autumn of Kochi." In this area spreading across the headwaters of the Monobe River, primeval forests almost untouched by human hands still richly remain, and the sight of wild maples covering the sheer cliffs and deep ravines can be described by no words other than overwhelming primal beauty. "I never knew such a place still remained in Japan"—the moment they first lay eyes on it, so many people can't help but cry out, such is its power.

Precisely because it isn't commercialized for tourism, there are almost no developed observation decks or shops. But that is exactly the true value of Okumonobe. A quiet dialogue between just you and the autumn foliage—with only the chirping of birds and the sound of the wind in your ears, you simply stand still, looking up at the blazing mountainside. The richness of that time is the very essence of travel, something you can't buy at any famous tourist site.

• Viewing season: early to late November (Kami City's official records show the peak has always fallen in November — typically early to mid-November, with mid-November in the most recent years; not a single year on record peaked in October)
• The time around noon, when the light shines straight down into the deep valley, is the golden hour when the ravine's colors shine most vividly. On the other hand, in the early morning, deep mist drifts among the mountains, and the fantastical scene where autumn foliage and mist melt together is also exceptionally beautiful. Changing your departure time depending on which face you want to see is also a way to enjoy this trip.

Ways to Enjoy It Like a Local In the Okumonobe area, a game-meat (jibie) eatery run by local hunters operates quietly, and during the autumn foliage season, the hot-pot dishes lavishly using Kochi-grown deer and wild boar are exquisite in a word. It's an authentic flavor with the savory richness of the mountains densely concentrated, something you can absolutely never taste at urban restaurants. Reservations are required in most cases, but it is more than worth building into your travel plans from the planning stage. Also, in the upper reaches of the Monobe River, you can enjoy amego (amago trout) fishing mingling with local families, spending a luxurious time forgetting the clock while casting your line.

Hidden Gem Info ⚠️ Important: Befukyo Onsen has been closed since April 2024 and, as of September 2026, no reopening date has been announced (Kami City Monobe Branch Office, tel. 0887-58-4181). The rest stop "Momiji Chaya" at Befukyo also ceased trading at the end of the 2020 fiscal year, so there is now neither a bathhouse nor a place to eat at Befukyo itself. The gorge and its autumn colours are still worth the drive, but buy food and drink before you head up, and if you want a bath afterwards, Mirabu Onsen near the Anpanman Museum is the practical alternative on the way back.

• By car (strongly recommended): About 1 hour 30 minutes north on National Route 195 from the Nankoku IC on the Kochi Expressway. No direct public-transport route from Osugi (Otoyo Town) to Befukyo Gorge has been confirmed by officials. Visitors planning to use public transport should contact Kami City Monobe Branch Office (0887-52-9289) before travelling.
• Car: About 1 hour 30 minutes heading north on National Route 195 from the "Nankoku IC" on the Kochi Expressway
• Estimated Travel Time: About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by car from central Kochi City. The drive itself, enjoying the deepening mountain scenery, lifts your spirits as a prelude to the journey.

Tips for Travelers

• The number of public-transport buses is extremely small, and in some cases only a few run per day. Be sure to check the latest timetable in advance and grasp the time of the last bus before setting out
• In mountainous areas there are wide zones where cell phone reception doesn't reach. We strongly recommend bringing a paper map or downloading an offline map to your smartphone
• Mountain-area temperatures are 5 to 10°C lower than in central Kochi, and after sunset it gets sharply cold. Cold-weather clothing and rain gear are essential as a set
• Although rare, this is an area with reports of bear sightings, so we recommend carrying a bear bell just in case. It can be easily obtained at outdoor goods stores or home centers

Best Viewing Times and Ways to Enjoy Autumn Foliage

The greatest charm of Kochi's autumn foliage lies in the fact that it doesn't conclude in one place. The officially published peak periods in Kochi concentrate in November: Befukyo (Okumonobe) peaks in early to late November per Kami City records; Ryugado Cave's surrounding foliage peak is not officially published; and the Shimanto River's main-channel foliage peak is also not officially published by Shimanto City or its tourism association. November is the month to plan around—a journey spanning the month of November lets you experience Kochi's autumn at its richest.

As a model travel plan, we recommend touring the three spots over a 2-night, 3-day trip based in central Kochi City. Renting a car dramatically increases your freedom of movement, letting you spend time in those moments of "I want to look at this scenery a little longer." The coloring of the mountainsides seen through the car window while moving also becomes a spectacular view in itself in Kochi.

Of course, the pleasures of the trip aren't limited to autumn foliage. Straw-grilled seared bonito (katsuo no warayaki tataki) and sawachi platter cuisine, wild sweetfish from the Shimanto River, the game meat of Okumonobe—autumn Kochi doesn't lag behind other seasons in the richness of its food, either. You fill up on scenery, then fill up even more on food. Such a happy journey awaits you.

[Most Important] Befukyo Has Neither a Hot Spring nor a Tea House

This bears repeating, because it is the single most important thing to know.

The Befukyo Onsen page on the Kami City official website has not been updated since 9 September 2024. When you visit to see the autumn leaves, there is nowhere to warm up and nowhere to eat. Please bring your own drinks, snacks, and warm clothing.

Past peak periods (as listed on Kami City official): 2024 = mid-November / 2023 = early November / 2022 = early November / 2021 = early November / 2020 = mid-November / 2015–2019 = early to mid-November.

Road Closures in Okumonobe (Monobe-cho)

These are the road restrictions published by Kami City as of 16 July 2026. Anyone planning to venture further into the mountains should confirm these before setting out.

Ryugado Cave (Kami City)

Please take note during the latter half of the foliage season: from 1 November, last entry is brought forward to 16:30.

Some websites still quote an adult price of "1,200 yen," which is an outdated figure that has remained online since the "Notice of Price Revision" (June 2019) on the Ryugado official website. The current price is 1,500 yen (confirmed on both the Tourist Course page and the Kochi Tabi Net update of 17 August 2026).

The Adventure Course costs the Tourist Course fee plus 2,000 yen (including management fee), with jumpsuit and boots rental at 1,000 yen; it takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and requires a telephone reservation by the day before. Note that the Nishibon-do Course (the water cave) is open only from 29 April to 30 September each year and is not available during the foliage season.

Biogasen Forest Road (UFO Line)

The planned closure date for autumn 2026 has not yet been announced. Because peak colour and the start of the closure period are close together, anyone planning to visit in late November must confirm the situation in advance. Also note that the absence of a car park is easily overlooked — please do not park on the roadside.

Nakatsu Gorge and Yasugi Gorge (Niyodogawa Town)

Although the stated guideline is "typically early to mid-November," in each of the past two years (2024 and 2025) peak colour did not arrive until after 20 November. The trend in recent years appears to be shifting later. Weekend traffic jams are expected around Yasugi Gorge, and visitors are asked to co-operate by using a detour on the return. The Nakatsu Gorge Autumn Foliage Festival (organised by Emisu Chaya tea house) is typically held on two days — the weekend of mid-November — but the dates for 2026 have not been announced (Emisu Chaya: 0889-36-0456).

Shimanto River Submersible Bridges and River Cruises

Sada Submersible Bridge (official name: Imanari Bridge) is 291.6 m long and 4.2 m wide, built in 1972 (Showa 47), and is the most downstream and longest submersible bridge on the Shimanto River. It has no guardrails and is just wide enough for one car. Local residents use it as part of their daily commute, so when taking photographs on the bridge, please take care not to obstruct traffic, and respect the privacy of local people and other visitors — a point the Shimanto City Tourism Association emphasises. Vehicle restrictions with security staff in place apply during the Golden Week and Obon holiday periods. Note that Nakahan-ke Submersible Bridge is closed to vehicles (Shimanto City official).

River cruises and yakatabune (roofed pleasure boats) (as listed by the Shimanto City Tourism Association)

Shimanto no Midori's "Furatto Tano Course" (shared boat, approx. 60 minutes) costs 2,000 yen for adults (junior high school students and above) / 1,000 yen for children / free for infants, operates year-round with departures every hour, and no reservation is needed. The fact that Kawanoeki Canoe-kan is suspended and Matsuhiroya has permanently closed is often not reflected in older travel articles — please be aware.

Iokinokutsu Cave (Aki City)

A natural sea cave approximately 40 m long that many visitors combine with a foliage trip. More than 40 species of ferns grow on its walls, and it has been designated a National Natural Monument.

The interior of the cave is wet, so please make use of the free wellington boot rental.
