Shimanto River and Kochi Castle โ Nature and History in Ryoma's Hometown
Shimanto River and Kochi Castle
Kochi Prefecture invites travelers into two of Shikoku's most distinctive experiences: the Shimanto River โ Japan's most celebrated undammed waterway, flowing crystal-clear through ancient forest โ and Kochi Castle, one of only 12 original wooden castles surviving in Japan, rising above a city deeply marked by the revolutionary spirit of Sakamoto Ryoma, the samurai who helped launch the Meiji Restoration.
Highlights
The Shimanto River's most iconic features are its chinkabashi (sinkable bridges) โ low guardrail-free structures that submerge harmlessly in floods, preserving a unique vernacular engineering tradition found nowhere else in Japan. Canoe trips on the river offer immersive contact with a natural environment of extraordinary clarity. Kochi Castle, completed in 1748, is the only castle in Japan where both the original main keep and the adjacent citadel (ninomaru) survive together. The castle stands in the center of Kochi City and is surrounded by cherry trees that create one of Shikoku's finest spring blossom settings. Kochi's Sunday Nichiyo-ichi market, operating for over 300 years, and the legendary katsutataki (seared bonito) complete the portrait of a place with deep local pride.
